Following the Suns disappointing 87-85 loss to the Warriors in the team's season opener, Bright Side of the Suns' Seth Pollack weighed in on what went wrong.

The Phoenix Suns dropped their season opener to the Golden State Warriors 87-85 on Wednesday night, and SB Nation's own Seth Pollack of Bright Side of the Sun posits that the team's insistance on running the pick and roll combined with some horrible outside shooting cost them.

The Suns shot 40 percent from the field and an abysmal 19 percent from three-point range and couldn't manage to knock off a Warriors squad that had serious shooting woes of their own, shooting 38.4 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from three-point range.

According to Pollack, the Suns inability to knock down open threes killed them.

I also remember [Goran] Dragic and [Marcin] Gortat trying to run middle pick and roll but with [Luis] Scola out behind the three-point line angle right where [Channing] Frye normally chills. When the defense collapsed, they kicked to the open Scola who doesn't shoot threes like Frye. Miss.

Another time running the pick and roll they kicked to [P.J.] Tucker on the left wing who missed a wide open long jump shot (he's not a jump shooter either).

So, basically, the Suns tried to run their old pick and roll plays that were so effective in 2010 when Frye, [Jared] Dudley and J-Rich were lights out floor spacers but with with guys who are not lights out floor spacers. Shockingly, that didn't work.

The Suns will hope to correct their woeful three-point shooting and perhaps rely less on an offensive shceme that they're not particularly cut out for any more when they take on the Detroit Pistons at 7 p.m. PT on Friday.

For comprehensive coverage of the Phoenix Suns, be sure to check out Pollack's excellent work at Bright Side of the Sun.

Nothing happens overnight, just ask Alvin Gentry, especially in particular to his potential star point guard Goran Dragic. You learn a lot about a team in a loss, how they react, how they regroup, and with this game it was not necessarily the worst loss in the world.

The Suns are who we thought they were. Ok, maybe a little worse than we originally thought, but this is just the first game of a long 82-game season. One game is only one game, but what the Warriors did was make the Suns look a lot of different things including old (at times), talent deprived, slow, very raw, and honestly like just another average team in the NBA.

Just like with the Los Angeles Lakers being 0-2 there is no reason to panic and jump ship just yet, but some of the obvious issues the team had coming into the season were highlighted.

For this game the team pulled out all the stops normally seen on All-Star Weekend with smoke, fire, fancy intro's for all the players and coaches, but it was too bad nobody came to see it. The U.S. Airways arena can fit nearly 20 thousand screaming fans, but the recorded attendance was 15,678. After scanning the crowd during the game that number feels a little embellished as you could hear a pin drop at times during the game. For a home opener.

Now this particular home opener happened on Halloween night, but against a familiar opponent that normally delivers an entertaining game, but this was not a classic Suns-Warriors game that we have grown accustom to with combined scores between 200-220 points. Rather it was a defensive struggle with bad shooting across the board.

Over the past two seasons the Suns were 5-2 against the Warriors with an average final score of 105.16 to 97.67 where in every game someone scored at least 100 points. Instead each team battled to establish a new identity around defense and just shot the ball poorly.

The poor shooting highlighted the primary issue the team had all pre-season in group rebounding as a whole. Time after time Marcin Gortat (among others) would blindly run at the rim after a long jumper was shot up not taking into account getting their body on an opponent giving them the angle to grab long rebounds. That is the recipe for giving up 17 offensive rebounds to a Warriors team that was 29th in the league on that end last year.

"Am I disappointed we lost, yeah. Do I think we are going to get better, hell yeah," stated Gentry after the game.

Rebounding was an issue, but it was not all about the negatives in this loss. Sure, the team has a lot to work on, but so do the Warriors in that regard. Each team shot the ball poorly, turned the ball over, gave up big leads, and didn't look like teams that have everything figured out.

In the end this game was more about the great play of Goran Dragic.

Dragic, at times, spread his wings and took over the game with dynamic plays creating for himself and for his teammates. He had little problem getting into the lane no matter who was defending, but the issue was consistency.

After the game Gentry said it was the growing pains of becoming the best player on a team when you are not used to being in that role, "it is not something that is going to happen overnight. We are still trying to figure out where guys are going to be when he drives and the avenues he has to pass." For the Suns to win these types of games Dragic needs to continue to put up 17 points 8 assists and six rebounds a night where more than 1 point and 1 assist come in the fourth and final period.

He is coming into his own as a play-maker in general it is going to come down to hunting for his shot when the team is in a tailspin. When the Suns were down 15 points Dragic made some plays, but the consistency wasn't there as Luis Scola spearheaded that run. Then when the team was squandering a near double-digit lead in the fourth quarter he passively set the offense.

Defensively there is little question to the impact Dragic can have on a game and tonight he proved it. He pressured Stephen Curry and Jarrett Jack into five fourth quarter turnovers that allowed the Suns to be in the game.

Team defense on the perimeter was a positive from Alvin Gentry after the game, especially that of his star point guard. "We have to complete defensive possessions with rebounds, we had a lot of good defensive possessions that we didn't close out," said Gentry.

The final play of regulation was a rat race, but it was telling in the light that Dragic did not look up at the game clock once. When he got to about the 30-35 foot mark on the floor instead of gathering himself for his own attempt for the win he turned and passed the ball with 0.2 seconds left. Passing is not the problem there, it is the decision-making as a point guard of when his team needs him to pass and when they need him to shoot.

These growing pains will not be solved for game two of the season against the Detroit Pistons because they are growing pains. Just like when someone grows 3-4 inches overnight and all of the sudden cannot walk straight or move normally, the same thing is happening for Dragic as he grew as a player over the past year and now needs to get more coordinated, as the teams star.

The Suns couldn't capitalize on a struggling Warriors starting five and fell to Golden State in their regular season opener on Wednesday night at US Airways Center. Check out all of our blogs' recaps at sbnation.com/nba-scores.

Golden State Warriors 87, Phoenix Suns 85

The Suns couldn't find a way to capitalize on a terrible shooting night by the Warriors and didn't shoot particularly well themselves in their 87-85 loss to Golden State on Wednesday night. The Warriors' Klay Thompson was the only Golden State starter to score in double figures, and David Lee (2-of-16) and Stephen Curry (2-of 14) had terrible shooting nights.

Point guard Goran Dragic led the way for the Suns with 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Power forward Luis Scola added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and small forward Jared Dudley finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Shooting guard P.J. Tucker was the biggest contributor off the bench, scoring 10 points in 23 minutes of play.

The Suns will hope to bounce back against the Detroit Pistons on Friday night at US Airways Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. PT.

Alvin Gentry very confident team will be good.

Prior to the 87-85 loss the Phoenix Suns suffered on Wednesday in their season opener to the Golden State Warriors, head coach Alvin Gentry talked about how his rotation is not going to be set in stone. "I think you've got to do it on a per game basis," he said. "Closing out will be a game-by-game basis. I think the guys that are going good and and played well and feeling good about it, then those are the guys that are going to close out games."

That is what happened on Wednesday night. Reserve forward P.J. Tucker came in off the bench and sparked the team with his defensive play in the first half and scored some big buckets in the second half, and ended up closing out the game in place of the talented Michael Beasley, whom the team is counting on to become their go-to player.

After the game, Gentry simply affirmed what he said would happen. "We've always been that way here," he said when asked about Tucker playing down the stretch. "When guys are going good, they're going to stay in the game."

Tucker ended up with 10 points and helped limit Golden State's Klay Thompson to 6-16 shooting overall after he had scored eight first quarter points.

Gentry said that Tucker did "a great job" on Thompson and pointed out how the team envisions him as a player like Grant Hill was in being "the defensive guy that can guard multiple positions."

Goran Dragic praised Tucker, saying he played "amazing defense" when he came in.n "He's just aggressive all over the court," Dragic explained. "If you are going to win games like these, everyone has to play like that."

Tucker said that his role on the team will be "exactly what [he] did tonight," playing hard and playing defense.

His 10 points were a bonus, but in the end it wasn't enough.

The Warriors went on a 13-2 run to start the second quarter and led by as many as 17. By then, the Sun had to play catch up. They did, pulling within six by halftime, leading by two heading into the fourth quarter and building the lead up to eight early in the final quarter.

However, the team only shot 40 percent and, according to Dragic, just didn't hit enough shots.

"Obviously it's a disappointing loss," said Gentry, noting that you want to win the home opener for the fans. However, he did note there were "a lot of good things" the team did. The held the Warriors to 11 fast break points and eight of those were off of Suns' turnovers. Golden State had four guys that shot over 45 percent from three-point range before and the team limited them to 29 percent for the game, 38 percent shooting overall.

That defensive effort is what led Gentry to say emphatically, "I really feel that we're going to become a good team."

He said "the effort was there." In the end, the Suns "just looked like a team that had nine new players."

The Suns are 0-1 and they have things to work on. They have to shoot better. They have to get comfortable with one another. They can't give up 17 offensive rebounds like they did to Golden State.

Gentry likes what he sees overall and is sure that the team is going to be good. It just isn't there quite yet after one game.

Curry shoots only 2-14 after signing his big contract and the Suns come back from big deficit only to fall in the final two minutes.

The Phoenix Suns opened their season hosting the Golden State Warriors on Halloween night. They fell behind early, but battled back to take a fourth quarter lead, but Carl Landry's two buckets in the last two minutes put the Warriors in front and ultimately a 87-85 win on opening night.

The first quarter was not in sync offensively for the Suns. They took a quick 9-4 lead, but behind the shooting of Klay Thompson, Golden State pulled ahead and finished the quarter with a 25-21 lead. The one bright spot for Phoenix was Jared Dudley, who was active scoring 10 points in the quarter.

With the reserves in, Golden State rattled off a 13-2 run to start the second quarter. The lead ballooned to as many as 17. However, when Luis Scola returned, he added a quick seven points, including a three-pointer to pull the Suns back within 10. With the starters on the floor, except with P.J. Tucker playing instead of Michael Beasley, they held the Warriors scoreless for nearly five minutes and Phoenix got within six, 48-42 at halftime.

The second half was a different story. Phoenix came out with energy and played active defense, sparked by Luis Scola's play on both sides of the floor. They held Golden State to 17 points in the quarter and Dragic scored another six points to give the Suns a 67-65 lead.

Phoenix pulled ahead by as much as eight points, but Golden State tied it up at 76 and then pulled ahead again, leading 83-82 with two minutes to go.
The games are real now as the pre-season comes to and end and the games now mean something more than buffers for a team with nine new faces. After a 4-3 record in the preparation season the Phoenix Suns open up against a familiar foe with lots of new faces.

One of, if not the most important factors of this season will be creating a new identity. The team is going to continue to run and score points in the system used over the past nine years, but establishing their defense, and half-court offense is going to be paramount.

"When you guys talk about us I want our identity to be that, man they play really hard, they compete like crazy," said Head Coach Alvin Gentry before the game on the teams potential identity.

That is the easy part. Playing with effort is Basketball 101 so hopefully that is not something he has to coach out of the team. With great energy players like Goran Dragic, Jared Dudley, Sebastian Telfair, and P.J. Tucker the volume of energy should be ratchet up to the max in all games.

The Golden State Warriors are a familiar team within the division, but pose new challenges with some good young players and the addition of a few veterans. They added veterans Richard Jefferson, Carl Landry, and Andrew Bogut to balance out the roster. Roy Williams came out tonight to watch his two former players Kendall Marshall (Suns) and Harrison Barnes (Warriors) in their NBA debut.

The starting line-ups were announced as:

PG - Goran Dragic v. Stephen Curry

SG - Jared Dudley v. Klay Thompson

SF - Michael Beasley v. Harrison Barnes

Our staff gives their predictions for the Suns and some of their players

The Phoenix Suns make their regular season debut on Wednesday night, hosting the Golden state Warriors. The team is a true mystery. Many predict them to be among the worst teams in the league, but they also have the young, athletic potential to be a decent playoff team if everything falls into place.

Since everyone is in the mood for predictions, we here SB Nation Arizona chime in and give you our thoughts. Here is what we are saying.

Tyler Nickel

30-52, 13th in Western Conference

During the 2012-13 season, I think Michael Beasley will be the key to this team's success. I see him both shining and slumping, to be honest. On some nights, he will put up huge points, probably breaking the 30 barrier more than a few times. On others, he will be lackadaisical and won't get his mind into the game, which will cause the Suns to suffer because of that. I also think Marcin Gortat struggles a bit more this year because of the departure of Steve Nash. Without his pick and roll partner, Gortat will not have nearly the same impact on the offensive end.

I don't believe they will make the playoffs because they do not have the talent to do so. While I love Jared Dudley, any time he is a starter for your team, you know you are going to struggle. That is a huge indicator to me of this team headed for a bad season. Luckily, that means they should be able to secure a decent draft pick for next summer.

I think Dragic will average somewhere around 7-8 assists per night, regaining a bit of the form that he had with Houston going down the stretch of the season last year. Gortat will probably average around 10 boards and could be another double-double machine, but I think he will struggle to score, as I noted earlier. Luis Scola will also take away a few of his rebounds, probably pulling down 6-7 per game. I think Beasley will average 18 points per game as the lead scorer for this team, but I unfortunately do not believe that will be enough.

Ryan Bafaloukos

Final season record: 28-54 12th in the Western Conference

There are a lot of questions marks surrounding this Suns team. How good is Goran Dragic? Which Michael Beasley are the Suns getting? How much will Gortat's production decline without Steve Nash? These questions will determine how good the Suns are. If Dragic keeps playing like he did the second half of last season, and Michael Beasley can play like he did in the preseason then maybe Phoenix can compete for a playoff spot. I do not think these things will happen. I think Gortat's numbers will decline and I think Phoenix will have a hard time scoring points this season.

Kris Habbas

Final season record: 40-42, 12th in Western Conference

The thing about the Suns is that they simply brought in too much talent to be a bad team. Adding Luis Scola and Michael Beasley will be the difference in this team winning 35-40 games instead of 25-30 games. Sure, they have a lot of question marks and "What If's" scenario's that need to be answered in a positive way for the season to swing their way, a lot. The way the Western Conference is shaking out is that the Thunder, Lakers, Spurs, Nuggets, Grizzlies, and Clippers are locks to make the playoffs sans injuries. For the Suns to make the big dance as a seven or eight seed they need more than a few teams to underperform including the Mavericks, Timberwolves, Jazz, and Warriors.

Far too many things have to fall the Suns way for them to make the playoffs this year, which rarely happens in sports, but the chips are on the table to be a very good team on a nightly basis. They should be interesting and exciting to watch.

Predictions:

1. Goran Dragic Statline: 16.5 PPG 7.5 APG 1.5 SPG

2. Michael Beasley Statline: 17 PPG 2.5 APG 6.0 RPG

3. Marcin Gortat Statline: 14 PPG 8.0 RPG 1.5 BPG

4. Markieff Morris Statline: 13.0 PPG 6.5 RPG

5. Kendall Marshall: 40+ DNP Coaches Decision

Jess Root

Final season record: 43-39, seventh in Western Conference

When I see the Suns' roster, it is a mystery. If everything falls into place, they could be a very good team because of the athletic talent they have. They could also be a disaster and be one of the worst teams in the league. I think Goran Dragic has grown enough that he will thrive and Michael Beasley will be a little inconsistent, but very good. You know what you get from Jared Dudley and Luis Scola. Marcin Gortat will be good, but not quite as good as last season, but it won't be so much because Steve Nash left. It will be because of the production from other players.

They will sneak into the playoffs and win a couple of games, and the season will be viewed as a raging success in this first year of transition.

The Phoenix Suns begin the post Steve Nash era by hosting the Golden State Warriors.

The Phoenix Suns open up their regular season by welcoming the Golden State Warriors into America West Arena. It's the official beginning of the post Steve Nash era for the Suns. Head coach Alvin Gentry has turned the reigns of the offense over to point guard Goran Dragic, who is back in Phoenix after a year and a half with the Houston Rockets.

Dragic isn't the only newcomer looking to make a good impression on the home crowd. Newcomers Luis Scola and Michael Beasley join Dragic in the front court. Shooting guard Jared Dudley to Suns.com that he sees Dragic as the leader of the team.

"I thought him leaving, going to Houston and starting has helped his confidence, helped his maturity," swingman Jared Dudley said. "He definitely is the face of the franchise now. It's his show."

One problem the Suns have is they're not entirely sure which members of the Warriors they'll be playing against. Both point guard Stephen Curry and center Andrew Bogut practiced earlier this week but it remains unclear if either will be available for Wednesday's game. Here's a look at the projected starters:

Suns: PG - Goran Dragic, SG - Jared Dudley, SF - Michael Beasley, PF - Luis Scola, C - Marcin Gortat

Warriors: PG: Jarret Jack, SG - Klay Thompson, SF - Harrison Barnes, PF - David Lee, C - Festus Ezeli

Tip-off for Wednesday's game is set for 7:00 p.m. PT. It's being broadcast on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on 92.3 KTAR-FM.
