The Cards really can get on the winning side of things again.

The Cardinals have lost three straight games. The offense has looked really bad in doing so, and it seems that fans have given up to the fact that the season is over.

It's not.

In fact, setting aside the Thursday night debacle in St. Louis, the Cards could easily be 6-1, and it is just a handful of plays.

In the game against the Buffalo Bills, Jay Feely missed a field goal (it was tipped) at the end of regulation. He hits that kick, and they are 5-2. Even in overtime they had another winning opportunity. LaRod Stephens-Howling dropped a screen pass that, had he caught, likely would have been a touchdown, ending the game.

Then against Minnesota, there were three plays that would have made the difference. John Skelton led the Cardinals into field goal range in the first quarter -- easy range -- and fumbled the ball when he was sacked, after he held the ball for what seemed like an eternity. Minnesota recovered, three points lost. That would have made the score 21-17 at least.

Jay Feely missed a 47-yard field goal at the end of the first half. He makes that, it is 21-20.

But the kicker is the third quarter interception by Skelton. He made a terrible decision and the ball was picked off and returned for a touchdown. That is a touchdown that was not allowed by the Arizona defense. If he just trips and falls or takes a sack, that touchdown is not scored. 20-14 Cardinals get the win.

Now, long field goals are missed sometimes. If you simply change the two turnovers, the Cardinals win 17-14, and we are all talking about how gutsy a win it was and how awesome the defense is and the offense is doing just enough to win, and the team is 6-1.

The Cards are truly three plays away from 6-1. That's crazy. That is just a testament to how good the defense is.

This is why the Cardinals will turn it around. They aren't getting blown out. It is simple and small things that are making the difference, and last season the team learned how to overcome them and execute better.

Could this get out of hand in a hurry? Yes, but the defense is playing at such a high level that one or two plays here or there by the offense and this team could be considered a major contender.

No worries. This is going to get better and we are going to talk about how great a year it was.

The Arizona Cardinals fell out of the top half of the NFL with their third consecutive loss this past weekend while the Atlanta Falcons got some rest and remained on top.

1) Atlanta Falcons (6-0) - Coming off their bye week the Falcons are the only undefeated team in the NFL but it remains to be seen how long that can last. Their upcoming schedule isn't the easiest with two NFC East opponents (at Philadelphia, Dallas) before facing a potential shootout in New Orleans then the tough Arizona defense. If they can make it through that stretch alive, they'll have a real chance at running the table. Previous Ranking: 1

2) Houston Texans (6-1) - How do you bounce back after being handed your first loss in embarrassing fashion in front of a Monday night audience? Well, you could always give last year's AFC runner up a throttling of their own with a 43-13 victory in front of your home crowd. That usually does the trick. Previous Ranking: 2

3) San Francisco 49ers (5-2) - The Niners won a throwback game Thursday evening with their overwhelming defense and chain-moving run game. After observing Alex Smith's play the past two games though, one has to wonder if his sprained finger is more troublesome than he's letting on. After throwing only one pick in his first five games, he's thrown four the past two weeks. Previous Ranking: 4

4) New York Giants (5-2) - Ain't it crazy that G-men can be victorious even when so many things aren't going their way? I guess you can give up 480 yards of offense when you have Eli Manning, A.K.A Captain Clutch on you team. The man has 1,108 yards, a 64.8 completion percentage, eight touchdowns and three interceptions when trailing in games this season. Sounds pretty elite to me. Previous Ranking: 5

5) Chicago Bears (5-1) - The Bears seem to have found their winning formula on offense with Jay Cutler taking what the defense gives him and Matt Forte keeping the time of possession battle in their favor. Throw the NFL's best defense in the mix and there's no reason to think this team can't get back to the NFC Championship. Previous Ranking: 6

6) Baltimore Ravens (5-2) - The losses of CB Ladarius Webb and LB Ray Lewis were glaring Sunday with the team giving up the most points since the Peyton Manning led Colts hung 44 on them back in 2007. But more concerning than anything was Joe Flacco's play. He likes to pretend he's one of the NFL's best but his Total QBR Sunday (0.3) was the lowest rating since for a quarterback since 2008. Previous Ranking: 3

7) New England Patriots (4-3) - Having to go to overtime against a wounded Jets team in Gillette is never a good sign. A win is a win and all but with this defense giving up 376 yards a game it remains to be seen if the Patriots will be able to contend with the high-scoring offenses of the AFC. Previous Ranking: 7

8) Green Bay Packers (4-3) - Remember when the Packers lost a heartbreaker to the Colts and everyone in Green Bay was ready to throw in the towel? Well don't look now but Aaron Rodgers has thrown nine touchdowns in their past two wins. The loss of Charles Woodson hurt but he isn't what he used to be. They'll survive. Previous Ranking: 11

9) Denver Broncos (4-3) - Remember when the Broncos lost a heartbreaker to the Patriots and everyone in Denver was ready to throw in the towel? Remember when I used this exact line in the previous blurb? Sorry for being a broken record but the combined win percentage of the Broncos' remaining opponents is .333. Get ready for strong finish from Manning and friends. Previous Ranking: 9

10) Seattle Seahawks (4-3) - Can't fault a young roster like the Seahawks' too much for losing a road game on a short week against a team of San Francisco's caliber. It was encouraging to see Marshawn Lynch (103 yards) put the team on his back against dominating run defense like the Niners, especially when you look ahead at the front sevens they still have on their schedule. Previous Ranking: 8

11) Minnesota Vikings (5-2) - Since when is the Vikings defense good enough to win a game where Christian Ponder only has 58 yards and eight completions? Still have to drop Minnesota a spot though with this team looking too sloppy to be worthy of a playoff spot Sunday. Previous Ranking: 10

12) Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) - You heard it hear first: the Iggles will hand the Falcons their first loss of the season next Sunday. If you're a Philly fan, please don't throw batteries at me if I'm wrong. Previous Ranking: 13

13) New York Jets (3-4) - If I had a say in things, I'd pick Rex Ryan as the early favorite for Coach of the Year. Sure, one game under .500 isn't impressive under normal circumstances but when you factor in all the Jets' injuries, it's shocking they have a win at all. Ryan somehow put his team in position for a chance at beating the Patriots and Texans in the final minutes of the game. Foot fetish FTW. Previous Ranking: 14

14) Miami Dolphins (3-3) - The Dwayne Bowe trade rumors didn't make much sense when the Dolphins already dumped off their headcase (Brandon Marshall) in the offseason. Then again, Ryan Tannehill does deserve better. An argument could be made that he's been the second best rookie QB behind RGIII, particularly when you look at what he's working with. Previous Ranking: 15

15) Pittsburgh Steelers (3-3) - Mike Tomlin's decision to go for a two-point conversion with 24 seconds left in the second quarter is just another in a string of questionable calls the head coach has been making lately. With that in mind, I find it interesting that the national media hasn't been more critical of him over the past couple weeks. Then again, it's hard to question a natural born winner. Previous Ranking: 21

16) San Diego Chargers (3-3) - Hopefully Norv Turner decided scale back the passing game during the bye week because it's clear Phillip Rivers can't win games by himself anymore. Expect Ryan Matthews to have a big second half after averaging 116 total yards over the past two contests. Previous Ranking: 18

17) Dallas Cowboys (3-3) - The Cowboys might have had the quietest win the history of the franchise this past weekend when they downed the Panthers in Carolina 19-14. Next Sunday won't be nearly as quiet with Dallas set to play a Giants team that's thirsty for revenge. Previous Ranking: 20

18) Arizona Cardinals (4-3) - There are only eleven teams in the NFL with four or more wins but the artists formally known as the Cardiac Cardinals are undoubtedly the worst. LaRod Stephens-Howling's 104 yard outburst Sunday was a pleasant surprise but this team is heading in the wrong direction fast. Arizona will very likely have six losses by the time December rolls around. Previous Ranking: 12

19) Washington Redskins (3-4) - It's a telling sign that the Washington Redskins might have played their best possible game Sunday and still came up short. They'll be competitive all year but don't expect a realistic wild card run. Previous Ranking: 17

20) St. Louis Rams (3-4) - The Rams basically had to play a road game Sunday with so many cheeseheads making the short trip to the S-T-L. Luckily, they remain at the Edward Jones Dome this week...what's that? They have to travel to London to play the Patriots and it counts for one of their eight home games? Man, Jeff Fisher can't catch a break... Previous Ranking: 16

21) Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) - So the Steelers figured out the blueprint to beat the Bengals: take away A.J. Green and Andy Dalton pisses down his leg. Why did it take so long for someone to try this strategy again? Previous Ranking: 19

22) Tennessee Titans (3-3) - The Titans offense is considerably less flashy with Matt Hasselbeck in there but you can't deny the results. The team is 2-2 with the former clipboard holder behind the wheel beating Buffalo on the road and earning a sneaky victory against the Steelers. Chris Johnson is clearly a Hasslebeck fan too as the roller coaster running back has averaged 112.8 rushing yards per game across the past four. Previous Ranking: 25

23) Indianapolis Colts (3-3) - The Colts played the ball control game Sunday, with their offense holding the ball for more than ten minutes more than Cleveland's. That's all with their starting running back, Donald Brown, still on the shelf with a knee scope. Then again, it always helps when Andrew Luck turns into a goal line back (two rushing touchdowns). Previous Ranking: 26

24) New Orleans Saints (2-4) - Guys! Guys! The Saints are on a two-game winning streak! Perhaps I should lower my voice though with Drew Brees and company heading to Denver to take on a Broncos team who has had an extra week to prepare. Previous Ranking: 27

25) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-4) - If Greg Schiano does so many things wrong then why does it all feel so right? I think the Bucs are buying into his program and you could see this team take the next step by season's end if they manage to stay healthy. Previous Ranking: 24

26) Buffalo Bills (3-4) - Even with how awful this defense has been, the Bills remain one game behind New England for the division lead. Actually, to get more specific, they're one Ryan Fitzpatrick gift of a pick away from being tied with the Pats on top the AFC East. Yeah, that's real life. Previous Ranking: 23

27) Detroit Lions (2-4) - I can't believe I'm saying this but I wouldn't be surprised to see Jim Schwartz's head to roll if this keeps up. Besides the Jacksonville game, I don't see a single matchup on their remaining schedule where the Lions should be considering a sure thing. Previous Ranking: 22

28) Oakland Raiders (2-4) - Just win, baby. Even if it takes the Jags losing their starting quarterback and running back. Previous Ranking: 30

30) Cleveland Browns (1-6) - Not sure why the Browns are risking their greatest asset by letting Trent Richardson play through his rib injury.
31) Kansas City Chiefs (1-5) - It's official: Brady Quinn has been selected as the man to lead the Chiefs out of the AFC West cellar.
John Skelton may have played a bigger role in the Cardinals' loss than the box score would indicate.

By all indications, John Skelton had a great game on Sunday. He only threw one interception, he had a timely TD pass, his completion percentage was up; it was a good day.

But when you delve deeper into the stats, watching the game as I did, you may realize that Skelton may have contributed more to the demise of the Cardinals than the aid of them. His decision making was not always great, many of his throws were inaccurate, his stats were padded heavily towards the end of the game, he was the reason for at least 2 or 3 of the team's 7 sacks allowed and, most of all, he could not lead the Cards to a victory against the always tough Minnesota Vikings.

When Skelton had receivers open at the chains, he often missed with some very errant throws. If he did hit them in stride, it came at the high risk of being intercepted. In all actuality, he probably should have given up more than the pick-six he surrendered. Throwing in to double or even triple coverage has become part of Skelton's makeup. It is also very noticeable as to the drop off from Kevin Kolb's ability to throw on the run and scramble to Skelton's. His mobility is limited, to put it nicely.

The Cardinals' third down efficiency wasn't great either, standing at a mere 5/14. Skelton struggled to find open receivers and when he didn't he held on to the ball for far too long given the offensive line personnel he has to work with. As I mentioned earlier, at least two or three of the sacks he took were caused by him holding on to the ball when he should have thrown it away.

While 262 yards through the air and a TD looks good on his resume, Cardinals fans that watched the game know that much of that game in crunch time, which is where Skelton seems to perform at his best. That is both a blessing and a haunting for the Cardinals, as he tends to struggle up until that point. By the time the team gets to within striking range, the game is near over.

Skelton must improve on his decision making and taking advantage of turnovers and red zone opportunities. If not, the offense will be stuck in this quagmire while he is under center. The defense cannot pick up all the slack that he seems to create.

To me, the Cardinals sorely miss Kevin Kolb at this juncture. He has shown that not only can he make big plays in crunch time like Skelton, but that when he gets time to throw the ball, he can do it in all four quarters. Consistency is the biggest thing Skelton lacks and he showed us that on Sunday.

Can he turn it all around before Kolb is healthy and ready to reclaim the starting job? I am not so sure.

Revenge of the Birds found five things the Arizona Cardinals can build on in Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

After a blazing hot start to the 2012 season, the Arizona Cardinals have quickly began to head in the wrong direction, losing their third straight game Sunday afternoon to the Minnesota Vikings, 21-14.

With the Minnesota Vikings being a surprising yet talented team in their own right, everyone realized the Cardinals were going to have a difficult time pulling off the upset, especially on the road. So with that in mind, Revenge of the Birds decided to take a glass half full approach and to try to find the positives in the defeat.

Some of the things that the Cardinals should build on were their ability to run the ball Sunday (LaRod Stephens-Howling finished with a career-high 104 yards) and their "bend don't break defense" that held quarterback Christian Ponder to only eight completions and 58 yards.

Additionally, the site also felt that overall the Cardinals were the better team on the field Sunday. Here's what user GreaZzy had to say on the subject:

"This is not meant as a slight to Minnesota at all ... However, on Sunday the Cardinals were the better team in nearly every facet, save the final score. Even with Adrian Peterson gaining 153 yards (seriously, that guy kills the Cards), Arizona was able to outgain Minnesota by almost 150. We're it not for a horrible decision by Skelton on the Harrison Smith interception return for a touchdown, and an untimely (and unfortunate) fumble while the Cardinals were driving and in field goal range, Arizona may have just won.

In the end, it was another loss. The Arizona Cardinals could not come up with enough offense to defeat the Minnesota Vikings, falling 21-14. There was a pick-6, a missed field goal and a spectacular defensive effort. Here is the good and the bad from Arizona in Week 7

The Good:

The defensive effort:

Minnesota was held to 209 total yards. They sacked Christian Ponder three times and intercepted him twice. They gave up only 14 points. Ponder threw for only 58 yards. Percy Harvin was held to only 47 offensive yards. Adrian Peterson did run for 153 yards, but you can't get too upset looking at the whole defensive effort. If a team allows only 200 yards and 14 points, that team should win 100 percent of the time.

LaRod Stephens-Howling had a career day:

After looking rusty against the Bills, the Hyphen went off. He carried the ball 20 times for 104 yards. He caught four passes for 45 yards. He scored a touchdown. It was the type of performance that makes me think he is capable of handling a starter's load.

Daryl Washington's domination:

The linebacker picked up another two sacks. He has six on the season, and he does not primarily rush the passer. He also had another nine tackles. You will be hard-pressed to find a more productive defensive player.

The Bad:

The offense just can't seem to put up points:

If you look at the individual numbers, you would think that they did all right. LSH rushed for over 100 yards. Andre Roberts had over 100 yards receiving. John Skelton threw for 262 yards. The problem? Only 14 points.

The offensive line is still consistently getting beat:

Skelton was sacked seven times. So much for the theory that the line blocks better for him rather than for Kevin Kolb. After only allowing five sacks in the first three games combined, the line has not given up less than five sacks in any single game. Both Kolb and Skelton have gone down with injury. Peter King might not be crazy now thinking that Ryan Lindley could be starting this season.

Missed opportunities and bad decisions:

Jay Feely missed another field goal and has not hit one since making the 61-yarder. John Skelton threw a pick-six. Turn those plays around and Arizona has a 17-14 win. With the defensive effort the team gets week after week, these are mistakes that the offense can't afford.

...

Can the Cardinals recover? Most certainly. They are one or two plays per game away from 6-1 or even 7-0. Last season they came around. Now is the time to do it again.

Cardinals offensive lineman Adam Snyder left Sunday's game with some quad bruising and did not return.

Arizona Cardinals right guard Adam Snyder left Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings with a left quad contusion and did not return.

Backup Rich Ohrnberger replaced him in the lineup after he departed and did an adequate enough job, helping LaRod Stephens-Howling set a new career-high in rushing yards (104 yards, 20 carries).

The Cardinals' offensive line was already one of the most beat up in the league entering the game and this surely won't help. From a glass-half-full perspective though, head coach Ken Whisenhunt didn't address the injury in his post game comments so it might not be too severe.

The Cardinals still have two more games before the bye but have an extra day of rest this week as they're set to play the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. Arizona worked out free agent tackle Chris Williams earlier in the week and he could be another possibility to replace Snyder if his absence will be long. Williams made 20 of his 38 career starts for the Chicago Bears at left guard.

A look back at Week 7's games in our weekly "Morning After" column, focusing on the Cardinals and the NFC West

This is how weird the NFL is. In the Arizona Cardinals last two losses, Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings and Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills, I believe they have played more consistent football than during their four game winning streak.

It goes to show you how a handful of plays can swing a game.

The Cardinals tied the game at seven on an impressive run by LaRod Stephens-Howling early in the second quarter, but that wasn't enough. Their first offensive possession of the game the Cards started off in Minnesota territory and came away with nothing. On the second offensive possession Arizona marched 74 yards on 13 plays over 8:18, but finished the drive with a John Skelton fumble. At minimum the Cards should have had 13 points after their first three offensive series and 17 or 21 points in better case scenarios.

Percy Harvin was limited to 57 total yards, which was his second lowest total of the season, and only the second time he was held to under 90 total yards. Christian Ponder threw for 58 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The most effective offensive weapon for the Vikings was Adrian Peterson, who picked up 153 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown.

Arizona's defense didn't give up a point in the second half and forced four three and outs on non clocking winding down Vikings' possessions.

But it wasn't enough because of John Skelton's crushing pick six to Harrison Smith right out of halftime.

The tone has changed for the Arizona Cardinals. They are playing more complete football as an entire unit, but they are no longer overcoming the mistakes or catching the necessary breaks they did to start the season.

Playing at this current level the Cards will have opportunities to beat bad to above average teams. The defense does enough to keep them in games and if they get a clutch play here or there plus a good bounce or two, victories can be had. The Seahawks, Patriots and Dolphins game are examples of when things go right, while the Bills and Vikings games were the opposite outcome. Arizona currently leaves too much up to chance.

With the next three games being home vs. San Francisco, at Green Bay and at Atlanta, how the Cards have performed the last two weeks and for the majority of the season isn't going to cut it. Against higher level teams, especially the Packers and Falcons, who both light up the scoreboard, points can't be left on the field.

When you get good field position touchdowns have to be scored, same with when you move the ball down into the red zone. During the course of the Cardinals three game losing streak they are averaging 11 points a game offensively and allowing 19 PPG.

In today's NFL teams can play well defensively and still give up point totals in the mid to high 20s. Your offense has to put points on the board.

If the offense doesn't start producing more points Arizona will either continually be put in positions where one or two plays will cost them a game or even worse when the defense isn't playing lights out - they won't have a chance of winning at all.

Western Hemisphere

The San Francisco 49ers reestablished themselves at the top of the NFC West with their Thursday night 13-6 win over the Seattle Seahawks. They were at home on a short week so you can't read too much into this win, but the Niners showed the physical identity on both sides of the ball that made them so good under head coach Jim Harbaugh. San Fran's next two games are in the division, Monday night against the Cardinals and three weeks down the road verses the Rams.

St. Louis fell to 3-4 with a 30-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers and could be in a bit of trouble even though they're clearly an improved team. The Rams next five games look like this - vs. New England, @ San Francisco, vs. New York Jets, @ Arizona and vs. San Francisco -- 3-9 or 4-8 is very likely.

Extra Points

I don't understand all the fuss about Cam Newton's press conferences after losses. I went back and listened to all eight minutes and I was a huge fan of how he handled himself. Is Newton supposed to be happy, go lucky after the Panthers drop a tough game to the Cowboys? He was clearly upset, but I was fine with how he acted. Newton speaks truthfully and honestly, takes responsibility and doesn't throw his teammates under the bus. It's his second year in the NFL, the former Heisman Trophy winner is a 23 year old kid, everyone has to take a step back and remember this. Give him time to grow and become more seasoned. I would be very careful of how critical and negatively you want to read into this season, it could come back to haunt you in the near future.

We potentially saw a fantastic quarterback rivalry born on Sunday. The New York Giants pulled out a 27-23 win over the Washington Redskins behind another Eli Manning fourth quarter comeback. Manning is 31 years old and Skins QB Robert Griffin III is only 22. Eli potentially has another 3-5 elite years left in him, while RG3 is proving to already be a top 10 QB as a rookie. It's going to be a lot of fun.

The New York Jets gave away a game against the New England Patriots they should have won. I've watched a lot of heart breaking Jets games and this one ranks right up there. That was a kick to the nuts.

Randall Cobb is starting to blow up now that he is getting more opportunities for the Packers. Two weeks ago he had his first 100 yard game, this week he had his first multi TD reception game. You may think I'm nuts, but the Packers are a better team with Cobb in the slot than Greg Jennings.

The Ravens schedule saves them; they are not a good football team. Next two games are @ Cleveland and vs. Oakland -- that puts them at 7-2. In the AFC, even if they go 1-6 following those two wins, Baltimore is getting to the playoffs.

Last year it was the AFC North, this year it could potentially by the NFC North. I would keep my eye on them as potentially be able to have three teams in the playoffs. I'm not as confident as I was that this would happen compared to last year with the Ravens, Bengals and Steelers, but it's in play with the Bears, Vikings and Packers. I have Chicago getting to 11 wins, Vikings 9 and Packers 12.

The Arizona Cardinals fell to the Minnesota Vikings 21-14 Sunday afternoon in Minnesota. The loss sinks the Cardinals to 4-3 as Arizona has lost three straight after their 4-0 start.

The Vikings took their second drive 88 yards on five plays and got into the endzone on an Adrian Peterson 13-yard touchdown run. Peterson finished the day with 23 carries for 153 yards and one touchdown.

Following a Christian Ponder interception by Paris Lennon, LaRod Stephens-Howling punched into the endzone from four-yards out to tie the game at seven early in the second quarter. The Vikings added a touchdown pass from Ponder to Percy Harvin in the second quarter, and led 14-7 at halftime.

On Arizona's opening drive of the second half, John Skelton was intercepted by Harrison Smith, who took it 32-yards for the Minnesota touchdown.

The Vikings never looked back as the Minnesota defense smothered the Arizona offense all game. The Cardinals turned the ball over twice and punted six times. Skelton was sacked six times and fumbled inside the Minnesota redzone.

One bright spot for Arizona was the play of Larod Stephens-Howling, the "Hyphen" rushed for 104 yards on 20 carries and had four catches for 45 yards in the Arizona loss.

The defense was solid again as they forced two turnovers and only allowed 58 passing yards. Daryl Washington led all Cardinal defenders with nine tackles and two sacks.
