Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson finished four places behind FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker in the race for the coveted PGA Tour trophy.

Following a fourth place finish at the Deutsche Bank and a second place finish at the BMW Championship, Mickelson had the opportunity to take home the $10 million FedEx Cup pot if he could just emerge victorious from the Tour Championship.

Unfortunately for Lefty, Mickelson finished the tournament tied for 15th, twelve strokes behind what it would have took to earn himself the FedEx Cup for the first time in his career.

Rory McIlroy (2,827 points), Tiger Woods (2,663 points) and Nick Watney (2,215 points) were the other three competitors that finished between Mickelson (2,073 points) and Snedeker (4,100 points) in the final standings.

Brandt Snedeker turned in arguably the best round of his eight-year career Sunday afternoon, sinking three birdies on the back nine to win The TOUR Championship along with the FedEx Cup, thanks to an overall score of 10-under.

Snedeker did bogey the 18th but by then the shot was irrelevant. Brandt was the only player from the last five groups to tee off who had a score under par, shooting a 2-under 68 on the day for his second title of the year.

Snedeker began the tournament sitting at fifth in the FedEx Cup standings. He finishes it $11.4 million richer with $1.4 million in earnings from The TOUR Championship and $10 million for the FedEx Cup.

Justin Rose was a not-so-close second, losing by three strokes. Rory McIlroy and Tigers Woods had a chance at the FedEx Cup title if they could pull off the victory Sunday, but both turned in terrible rounds. Woods finished the day two-over with four bogeys and a double bogey. McIlory's play was even more brutal with a score of four-over to finish 1-over overall.

Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson finished tied for 15th with an overall score of +1. He was not a factor for much of the weekend but did finish with four birdies in the tournament's final round.

Brandt Snedeker and Justin Rose have moved into the lead after three rounds at the 2012 Tour Championship, with Snedeker having the day's best round at 6-under.

Both men are 8-under overall. Ryan Moore is in third after a strong day. He shot a 65 to climb eight places up the leaderboard. Jim Furyk is just behind him. After opening the day in first, a triple bogey on hole No. 17 sent Furyk down to a tie for fifth. Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson are there with him, all at 5-under.

Tiger Woods had a better day than he did on Friday, going 3-under for the round and ending tied for seventh at 4-under overall. ASU grad Phil Mickelson struggled for the second day in a row, falling four places down the leaderboard to a tie for 20th. He went 2-over for Round 3 and is 2-over in total.

Round 3 of the 2012 Tour Championship is unfolding, and as it does Jim Furyk is doing just enough to maintain his position at the top of the leaderboard. He's at par through six, sticking at 7-under overall and in first place. Ryan Moore, Bubba Watson and Justin Rose are all tied at 6-under just behind Furyk, and Moore has a ton of momentum behind him. He has five birdies, including four straight on hole Nos. 7 through 10. He's through 10 and on pace to have the best round of the day.

Tiger Woods is doing better on Saturday than he did on Friday. After a score of 73 pushed him out of the top 10, he's gone 1-under through 11 into climb to a tie for eighth. Rory McIlroy is part of that tie, sliding down a place after going 1-over through eight. Former ASU Sun Devil Phil Mickelson opened the day with a double bogey and has yet to recover. A pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys have him at 2-over through 14 and 2-over overall, leaving him tied for 22nd.

As one of seven Americans in the top 10 following the second round of the Tour Championship, Jim Furyk is holding on to a one-stroke lead atop the tournament leaderboard following his 6-under score Friday.

Furyk, who is sitting at seven-under overall, birdied seven of his first 10 holes before racking up three bogeys on his final eight. Justin Rose, who was tied for the lead after Thursday, settled back into second place after totaling five birdies and one bogey on the back nine.

Americans Bubba Watson and Bo Van Pelt both finish with a 5-under, which is good enough to be tied for third heading into Saturday's third round.

Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson has yet to make any noise following Friday's score of one-over. Mickelson is now even overall through two rounds with two birdies Friday against a double bogey and a bogey.
