After the Diamondbacks exploded for four home runs last night, the San Diego Padres slammed three of their own today, as they downed the Diamondbacks 8-2 this afternoon. With the win, the Padres take the series 2-1, and have now beaten the Diamondbacks for the tenth time in 15 games this season. The Padres have been playing well as of late, and are 14-6 in their last 20 games. The Diamondbacks end their ten game road series with a 5-5 record, and have now lost their 25th series of the season.

The Padres scored first when Carlos Quentin led off the second inning with his 21st double down the left field line. Jesus Guzman was walked, and that was followed by another double by Cameron Maybin. Maybins' double scored Quentin, and a sacrifice fly by Andy Parrino scored Guzman later in the inning, giving the Padres an early 2-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks manufactured a run in the top of the third to close within one. Adam Eaton doubled to left, followed by an Aaron Hill walk. The Diamondbacks executed a double steal with Jason Kubel at bat, and when Kubel grounded out to first, Eaton scored.

Padres starter Andrew Werner held the Diamondbacks to just that one run, after pitching 6.1 innings on the day. He gave up four hits, three walks, and struck out six Diamondback hitters, while getting his second win in his fourth major league outing.

Patrick Corbin gave up one more run in the sixth inning, a lead-off homer by Chris Denorfia, before getting replaced by Matt Albers. Corbin lasted 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.

The game was still within reach until the Padres exploded for five unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After two walks and an error extended the inning, Chase Headley ripped a grand slam over the right field wall for his 27th home run of the season. The Padres hit back-to-back home runs off reliever Takashi Saito when Carlos Quentin nailed his 16th home run over the left field wall, and the Padres lead grew to 8-1.

The Diamondbacks scored one meaningless run in the ninth inning. After Miguel Montero singled and Chris Johnson walked, Gerardo Parra grounded out to second, scoring Montero from third. The Diamondbacks left 20 runners on base during the game, and are now 20-52 in games where their opponent scores first.

The Diamondbacks have dropped four consecutive games with Patrick Corbin on the mound, and now sit three games under .500. The Diamondbacks sit at 5-5 as they are in the midst of playing 25 consecutive games against National League West rivals. They will have a day off before heading home for an eight game home stand at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks will play two games against the Dodgers, then three against the Giants, and finish with three more games against the Padres.

Being 5½ games out of the playoffs with just 22 games remaining, the Arizona Diamondbacks need to win every series possible. Today, they have an opportunity to win their series against the San Diego Padres, after snapping a seven game losing streak against the Friars last night. After going 2-8 in their most recent home stand, the Diamondbacks are 5-4 on this road trip, hoping to end it today with another win. Left-hander Patrick Corbin will get the start for the Diamondbacks, while lefty Andrew Werner will start for the Padres.

Corbin did not figure in his last outing, a 9-8 loss to the San Francisco Giants September 3. He threw five innings, and after allowing four runs in the first, he retired 13 of the final 16 batters he faced. The last win Corbin recorded was on August 18, when he helped the Diamondbacks beat the Astros 12-4. Corbin, who is in his third stint with the Diamondbacks this season, is 5-6 with a 4.13 ERA in 12 big league starts. Corbin will be making his first start at Petco Field against the Padres today.

Werner is making only his fourth major league start of his career, after being called up and making his MLB debut August 22. In his last outing, Werner did not figure in the decision after pitching six innings, and allowing only two runs on five hits, while striking out eight. Werner has pitched six innings in each of his previous three outings, and has given up a home run in each game. He has 17 strikeouts in his total of 18 innings pitched, and is 1-1, with a 3.00 ERA in his three career starts.

The Diamondbacks will get Monday off after this series and then begin an eight game home stand, with two games against the Dodgers, three against the Giants, and three more against the Padres. The Diamondbacks are 27-17 in series finale games this season, and are hoping to win their 17th overall series this year.

The Arizona Diamondbacks' playoff hopes are on life support already, and losing a three-game series to the San Diego Padres wouldn't exactly help much. The Diamondbacks will look to avoid that fate when they face the Padres on Sunday at PETCO Park.

The Diamondbacks will put young gun Patrick Corbin on the mound in the series finale with hopes of reversing the pitchers' recent fortunes. After winning the 23-year-old's first four starts in August, the D'Backs have dropped his last three.

The Padres will trot out 25-year-old lefty Andrew Werner, who is even younger in mound time than Corbin. Werner will be making just his fourth Major League start.

The Diamondbacks are 9.5 games back of the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.

It would take a miracle at this point for either Arizona (9.5 GB) or San Diego (14.5 GB) to catch up to San Francisco. The teams are playing for dignity and employment next season. D-Backs' starting pitcher Wade Miley would earn his team leading 15th win of the season on a 8-5 victory over the Padres.

Arizona chased SD starting pitcher Casey Kelly from the game after only 2.1 innings. In that short period of time, Kelly gave up eight hits and six runs, three of which were home runs. Thanks to Kelly, Jason Kubel would go on to hit his team high 28th and 29th home runs on the season.

After Kelly's exit, the Padres' bullpen would surrender only two runs on seven hits. One of those hits would be the D-Backs fourth homer of the night, this time off the bat of Justin Upton.

D-Backs' starter Wade Miley had a less-than-stellar night with five runs on eight hits. It didn't matter though because he got the win in the end. Credit JJ Putz with his 29th save.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to Wade Miley (14-9, 2.90 ERA) to turn things around in the second game of their three-game series against the San Diego Padres. Arizona lost Friday night, 6-5, and is 4-9 against San Diego in 2012.

Miley has a 2.28 ERA over his last four starts and would have picked up a win in his last start were it not for J.J. Putz giving up two runs in the ninth. Miley will face Casey Kelly (1-0, 3.86 ERA), who is making his third start for the Padres since being called up to the majors. He pitched six scoreless innings in his debut but gave up seven runs (five earned) in a loss at Colorado.

The Arizona Diamondbacks opened a three-game set in San Diego on Friday, hoping to build on their series win in San Francisco. But the Padres chased Arizona starter Tyler Skaggs after three innings and Chase Headley hit two home runs, including the game-winner in the eighth inning to give San Diego a 6-5 over the D-backs.

Skaggs did not his best stuff. In the first inning, after Chris Denorfia and Logan Forsythe each singled to start things off, with one out Yasmani Grandal lined a double just inside the third-base line to score them both. In the third, Denorfia and Forsythe set the table again. Denorfia walked and Forsythe singled, then Chase Headley hit his 25th homer of the year to make the score 5-0.

He would retire the next three batters, but that would be the end of his night.

In the top of the fifth, Arizona finally got on the board. Miguel Montero singled up the middle, Chris Johnson got a hit off the glove of shortstop Everth Cabrera, then Ryan Wheeler, playing in the place of Paul Goldschmidt, who was under the weather, hit a blast that almost got to the right-field stands. It ended up as a double that drove in both Montero and Johnson to get the D-backs within three.

Cashner was able to retire the next three hitters to end the rally.

He would give way after that inning, giving way to the bullpen.

Ryan Wheeler would drive in a third run in the sixth inning, when he doubled with one out and Miguel Montero on first base, having reached base on a wild pitch when he struck out.

Then in the eighth inning, things got fun for Arizona. Adam Eaton had an infield hit to start things off. With one out, Jason Kubel walked. With two outs, Miguel Montero, who had already scored two runs on the night, doubled both runs, tying the score at 5-5 with a double to the right-center gap.

But Chase Headley would put the D-backs in their place to lead off the bottom of the eighth. With the count 3-1, he blasted a David Hernandez fastball for his second homer of the night to give the Padres a 6-5 lead.

Luke Gregerson retired the D-backs in the ninth for his fifth save of the year. Brad Brach (1-4) got the win. Hernandez took the loss, falling to 2-3.

The loss wasted an otherwise brilliant effort by the bullpen, who between Brad Bergeson, Josh Collmenter and Takashi Saito combined for four scoreless innings before the homer Hernandez allowed.

The win was the seventh straight by San Diego over Arizona.

Riding high after taking two-of-three games against San Francisco, Arizona is looking to continue its recent hot streak and stop a seven-game skid to San Diego.

Sitting on the outside fringe of a possible playoff berth, the Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to stop a seven-game losing streak to the San Diego Padres when the two teams start a three-game series tonight at 10:05 p.m. ET/7:05 p.m PT in Petco Park.

The Padres (64-74, 33-33 home) have swept the Diamondbacks (68-70, 35-36 away) their last two series, outscoring them 42-20. The last time Arizona defeated San Diego was June 3. But with hopes of a playoff berth reinvigorated after winning two out of three games against the NL West leading San Francisco Giants, that's a streak the Diamondbacks are looking to put an end to tonight.

On the mound, San Diego will start Andrew Cashner (3-3, 3.44 ERA), while Arizona will go with Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 2.60 ERA). Cashner is making his first start since July 3, when he strained a right lat muscle. The 21-year-old Skaggs is making just his fourth ever major league start.

Arizona is 9.5 games back in the NL West and 6.5 games back in the wildcard. San Diego, meanwhile, is 13.5 games back and 10.5 games back, respectively.
