It's hard to imagine a Phoenix Coyotes team without Shane Doan, simply because there hasn't been one.

Doan was drafted fifth-overall by the then Winnipeg Jets in 1995 and made the move to the desert when the team relocated the season after.

Doan assumed the captaincy in 2003–04, and has been the most consistent aspect of the Coyotes franchise since then. His resigning Friday, for a reported four years and $21.2 million, secured that Doan will be a Coyote lifer.

Things have not been rainbows in butterflies this offseason in Phoenix. Greg Jamison was on the verge of purchasing the team, but struggles with the city of Glendale have led to complications in the sale and lease agreement.

Doan was supposedly waiting for the deal to go through before resigning, but with the NHL players set to be locked out by the owners at midnight Saturday, he had no choice.

"I wish that it was completely done, and well it's not done," Doan said. "The questions have been answered in regards to Mr. Jamison having the money and Mr. Jamison having the approval from the league supposedly. He's just waiting on the lease agreement, and those three things line up then this will be done. That's kind of where we're at."

It was never clear if Doan would stay or go. While it was hard to imagine that Doan would leave the city he had called home for 15 years, he was the most sought after player on the NHL free agent market for the majority of the offseason. At one point or another, he was linked to nearly every NHL team.

What Doan's signing does is bring stability to the Coyotes franchise—which have been anything but that lately.

The Coyotes had their campaign in franchise history last year, but the faces in the locker room will look tremendously different this year. Veterans Ray Whitney, Taylor Pyatt, Michal Rozsival and Adrian Aucoin all bolted for new teams this offseason.

One thing that won't change next season is who will be wearing the C. Having Doan around will do wonders for the team as they enter the 2012-13 season (when it does eventually start).

"It was enticing to hear the offers, but this came down to the job this organization has done over the last few years," Doan said of his decision.

Doan has been the model of loyalty during career with the Coyotes franchise. His resigning Friday secures that he will go down as the greatest player in Coyotes history.

Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan ended an offseason of pseudo-suspense and announced he would remain a Coyote at a press conference on Friday saying, "I want to see us raise a banner here in the building and I want to be here to do it."

As a lockout looms over the NHL's shoulder and with the Coyotes finally about to have a sale go through, Doan signed a four-year contract worth $21.2 million with a $2 million signing bonus. The deal was completed one day before the NHL will lock out the players after a new collective bargaining agreement couldn't be reached.

Doan is a 16-year Coyote veteran and ignored offers from other franchises to stick with the only team he has known. He scored 22 goals and had 28 assists in 79 games last year as he helped lead the Coyotes to their first Western Conference Finals. The eventual Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings eliminated the Coyotes in five games.

The instability of the Coyote's ownership hampered Doan signing with the team earlier in the offseason. He became a free agent on July 1 and expressed his desire to play with Phoenix often.

"This was as far as I could push it without going crazy, I think," Doan said.

Now 35, Doan has been a member of the Coyotes since the Winnipeg Jets chose him in the 1995 NHL Draft.

The playoff run last year gave Doan hope for the future. He waited until July 9 to start negotiations after the lease agreement with new owner Greg Jamison became clearer.

"It kind of came down to me continuing what we started here," Doan said. "The Last three years are arguable as much fun as I've had in the NHL, and last year in the playoffs was amazing and I want to do it again."

Keeping the face of his franchise was one of the easier decisions Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney has had to make. His tenure as captain of the Coyotes is tied for second longest among active NHL players.

"We are thrilled to sign Shane to a long-term contract," Maloney said in a statement. "Shane is our captain and the heart and soul of our franchise. He is the consummate professional and one of the best leaders in the NHL. His loyalty, commitment, integrity and passion for the game epitomize everything you'd want in a player. It was a priority for us to sign him to a long-term deal so that he can play for the Coyotes for the remainder of his career."

It appears Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan has narrowed his free-agent options to two NHL teams: the Coyotes and the Vancouver Canucks. And he'll make the decision on which team he'll play for as soon as Friday, according to a report.

Doan, the captain of the Coyotes and the only original Coyote from when the team moved from Winnipeg in the mid-1990s, has an agreement in place for a contract with the Yotes. But he's waiting on the settling of the ownership situation, an annual thing in the Valley of the Sun, before signing on the dotted line.

While that saga plays out and likely won't be settled in the next couple of days, Doan has another option: the Canucks. If he isn't satisfied with what comes of the Coyotes ownership drama, he can bolt for British Columbia when he signs Friday, just before a possible lockout of the players.

Doan is one of the most recognizable pro athletes in the Phoenix area. He's visible in the community and would like to stay in Arizona. But he might have to take a leap of faith if he really wants to remain.

The sale of the Phoenix Coyotes to a group led by Greg Jamison is closer to reality after Jamison secured the funding needed to buy the team from the NHL, according to a report from ESPN.

With the financing in place, Jamison moves one step closer to purchasing the team from the league for $170 million. In addition to securing the financing, ESPN's report also states the investor group and the City of Glendale are expected to resolve any lease agreement issues by the end of September.

The deal and the resolved lease with the city will put to bed the long standing relocation rumors. The new ownership group reportedly has a deal with Glendale for a 20-year lease of the Jobing.com Arena. While the other investors have yet to be identified, some are reportedly part of the Ice Edge Group, a group which attempted to purchase the team earlier this summer.

With the threat of a pending lockout looming overhead, the Phoenix Coyotes have simply been treading water this offseason instead of making big splashes.

"Everybody is in a holding pattern in regards to the deals they can potentially make," Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney said. "The last number of years August is a quiet month anyway, but this CBA makes it a little quieter than normal."

As potential buyer Greg Jamison continues to mull over his options and the status of captain Shane Doan's future in rizona remains up in the air as well, the Coyotes certainly have some items on the docket they'd like to take care of. And as training camp is right around the corner in mid-September, the affects of CBA negotiations are truly taking it's toll on teams like Phoenix, who reamin in wait to see how things pan out.

The current CBA expires on September 15. If a new deal cannot be reached by then the NHL plans to lock out it's players. Discussions to create a new CBA are ongoing.

At this point we do not have a definitive time table, although we have heard that the announcement won't be made until later, probably closer to the Coyotes training camp.
Multiple sources have recently reported that Jamison has secured the necessary finances to purchase the team. On Wednesday, the Sporting News reported that Jamison finalized a group of partners to buy the franchise. Jamison's group has been attempting to buy the Coyotes since last year. A sale to Jamison would prevent relocation and keep the franchise in Phoenix to the delight of Coyotes fans.
