Suns forward Channing Frye will be sidelined for the next two months with an enlarged heart that was discovered during a team physical.

This is a serious health situation, not an injury. During a routine screening during a pre-season physical it was discovered that Channing Frye has -- in medical terms a Dilated Cardiomyopathy -- an enlarged heart. Initially there was no timetable set for a return because there is not a standard that can be followed in terms basketball terms for this.

It was later reported by Paul Coro that he will miss the 2012-2013 season.

This past April Frye suffered a partially dislocated shoulder in which he was still recovering from today. That injury already drew questions to whether the sharp shooting forward would be available for the season opener.

Limiting the stress and strain on his heart and body is going to be key. Frye stated he will stay active in his rehab, mainly with yoga and golf. He is categorizing this as a "virus" so it has a good chance at going away for a full recovery.

The team will be monitoring this closely to ensure Frye does not return too early and his health is being put as the primary concern at this point. "Nothing is more important to us than the health and well-being of our players," said Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby. "Channing and his family have the full support of our organization. His health is our primary concern and we are committed to helping him in any way he needs."

Nearly a year ago today during a routine physical for Jeff Green of the Celtics it surfaced he had an aortic aneurysm. That cost him the season

As of today he will not participate in basketball activities until at least December when he will be reevaluated again. Training Camp begins for the team on October 1st (in a little under two weeks), pre-season on October 10th in Sacramento, and the season tips off on October 31st at home against Golden State. Frye will miss all of those dates and more. This is a health situation, not an injury.

Frye has been with the Suns for the past three years after unimpressive stints with the Knicks and Trail Blazers. He found his nitch as a stretch-four knocking down three point shooter. His leadership and experience with other members of the team will be sorely missed from a leadership standpoint.

Last year Frye experienced his best all-around season in the NBA becoming a very reliable defender on top of his shooting prowess. Moving forward it will be expected of Markieff Morris and Jermaine O'Neal to pick up the slack for the loss in the post.

Looking at the depth on the roster today the absence of Frye creates a large void. Morris does a lot of what Frye can do, but is also still just a second year player learning the ropes. This loss makes the acquisition of O'Neal even more important as he is now the back-up center unless the team makes a move.

This is a tough blow to the team on and off the court, but the course of action is the most appropriate.

The same has happened in the past to Willie Cager of Texas El-Paso in 1965, and Hank Gathers passed away of a heart attack on the court due to a condition (exercise-induced venticular tachycardia) that was looked at with more caution from everyone around him.

Obviously the health of a player is the most important aspect of this evaluation and the team is taking the precautionary methods needed to ensure Frye is in the best position to return when healthy. With Aaron Nelson and this staff Frye is in the right hands.

Enjoy that ocean breeze guys, it could be a tough season back here in the desert. That is what the team will be doing in San Diego as they announced Training Camp will take place there for five days starting on October 2nd.

Other than a trip to Italy in 2006 -- not too shabby -- the Suns have trained in-state every year since 1986 splitting time between Flagstaff, Tucson, and Phoenix over the years. It is not a surprise that in 2009, 2010, and 2011 the team switched gears to train in San Diego with a few connections to the city in the organization.

Aside from the weather part-owner Jenny Craig has a facility in her name in San Diego and Jared Dudley is from there. So Duds can show the newbies on the team all the good eats along the coast and keep an eye on everyone.

This is Duds time to shine. Everyone respects him, likes him, and knows what he brings to the table out here in Phoenix, but this is a new team without an established leader. Is that Dudley? They will be in his hometown, which can be a pretty fun spot when you have a tour guide. With all these young guys Duds better be up to being a leader and a baby-sitter.

I like the idea of getting out of town away from the fans, distractions, families (in most cases), and just focusing on work. San Diego isn't as remote as Flagstaff or Tucson, but it should do the job for the Suns as they get ready for pre-season action.

Do you like the idea of the Suns going out of state for training camp?

They will be headed out of town as the team has announced that it will hold its training camp in San Diego, working out at University of California Sand Diego in La Jolla.

It is the third time that the Suns have held their training camp out of the state of Arizona.

The team will hold its media day on October 1, after which the team will head to San Diego. From October 2-6, the Suns will have two-a-days, holding one practice each day from 10 AM to noon and again from 6-8 PM.

The Brazilian Blur might be returning to Phoenix, Leandro Barbosa said. The Suns are now an option to land the scoring guard for the upcoming season according to recent a interview.

Barbosa is a free agent this year and was a fan favorite when he played for the Suns between 2003 and 2010. He averaged 12.6 points a game, and posted his best year in 2006-07 when he scored 18.1 points per game and won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award. He has played the last two years for the Toronto Raptors and the Indiana Pacers.

In an interview with a Brazilian blog, Barbosa said that returning to the Suns could be an option. The interview is in Portuguese of course, but luckily Google Translate can attempt to provide a little insight.

I'm talking, among others, with the Phoenix Suns franchise that have a history, a life there, with the Brooklyn Nets, we tried harder and the Los Angeles Lakers - is very hot with the staff there too. The Steve Nash texted me so I go there, even. When I was in the Olympics this conversation happened pretty strong, but then they signed with another wing and then cooled a bit. They have many owners, and if they would hire me to take one of the cast. It's early, I have to wait.

Barbosa left the Suns in 2010 after injuries and depth limited his minutes in the rotation. If the Suns bring Barbosa back it would be for a backup role as the team added guards Goran Dragic and Kendall Marshall in the offseason.

Former NBA guard Lindsey Hunter has been hired by the Phoenix Suns to focus on player development.

Former NBA guard Lindsey Hunter has been hired by the Phoenix Suns as an assistant coach. He will focus on player development for the young Suns, according to AZCentral.com.

Hunter spent last season as a college scout. He played 17 years in the NBA, primarily with the Detroit Pistons. His only previous coaching experience was as an assistant to his son's high school team, but as the Golden State Warriors showed in hiring Mark Jackson, experience leading a team as a point guard is a valuable coaching commodity in the NBA.

Suns' General Manager Lance Blanks says the the focus is to have younger coaches who are more accessible to players.

"This is really important to me," Blanks said. "It's not something that was needed. What the organization was doing worked. It won at a very high level. Different personnel and situation. This will create a lot of continuity between front office, coaches and training staff."

With a team full of young, developing players like Goran Dragic and Michael Beasley, it appears the Suns are willing to try new techniques to get the team moving in the right direction.

The Phoenix Suns are about to embark on their first season without Steve Nash in a very long time, and the folks over at ESPN don't feel too bullish about their chances. As part of their 2012-2013 season forecast, ESPN projects the Suns to finish 14th in the Western Conference with a 30-52 record.

Last season, the Suns finished with a .500 record, but they no longer have the services of Nash, one of the game's top point guards. Now, Phoenix is focused on a core led by new acquisitions Goran Dragic, Michael Beasley, Wesley Johnson and Luis Scola, plus incumbents like Marcin Gortat and Channing Frye.

ESPN isn't buying the new roster as a good thing, though, projecting Phoenix as one of the league's worst teams. Only the Sacramento Kings are projected to be worse, and that's only by a single game, as their projected record is 29-53.

Phoenix Suns center Jermaine O'Neal is among a contingent of NBA players heading to Germany over the offseason to get special knee treatment, as Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports. The treatment was popularized around the league by Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who had a strong 2011-12 season after getting the procedure done last year.

According to Coro, O'Neal is among a group of players heading to Germany that also includes Clippers forward Grant Hill, who left the Suns to join L.A. a few months ago. They'll be undergoing a procedure known as Regenokine, which Coro describes below:

The treatment takes five days and begins with having blood drawn, incubated, heated and spun into a centrifuge to make an orange serum. That is injected into the arthritic joint daily for five days.

Athletes have been heading to Dusseldorf, Germany, to have the procedure done by its inventor, Dr. Peter Wehling. The treatment is extremely expensive, but it's been used by top athletes around the U.S. recently, including baseball player Alex Rodriguez and golfer Fred Couples in addition to a variety of NBA players.
