The UFC started off 2012 with a bang as all five main card fights of UFC 142 ended with finishes of some kind. Jose Aldo defended his UFC Featherweight Title with a knockout of Chad Mendes and Vitor Belfort defeated Anthony Johnson by a first round submission to highlight an action filled night.

Aldo was dominant to say the least. He landed vicious leg kicks on Mendes at will and stuffed Mendes' many takedown attempts. The knockout came just as round one was ending, Aldo fought his way out of a clinch and landed a kick to Mendes on the way out. Aldo quickly came in and finished Mendes with the official time of the stoppage, 4:59 of round one. Aldo then preceded to jump out of the cage and into the Brazilian crowd after his victory in celebration.

Vitor Belfort submitted Anthony Johnson in the evening's co-main event. Johnson came out firing and attempted to take Belfort down multiple times in the opening minutes. Referee Dan Miragliotta stood the fighters up multiple times during the first round when the action had stalled. When Johnson attempted another take down, Belfort stopped it and quickly took the back of Johnson. After some elbow strikes, Belfort locked in a rear-naked choke at the time of 4:45 of the first round.

Johnson was released later that night from the UFC. This was the third time that Johnson failed to make weight for a fight in the UFC. Johnson weighed in on Friday at 197-pounds, 11 pounds over the middleweight limit.

Edson Barboza and Erick Silva both had impressive knockouts in their respective fights. Barboza landed what Joe Rogan said was the first spinning heel kick knockout in UFC history.

Silva seemed to have an impressive knockout victory as he finished his opponent, Carlo Prater, in 29 seconds. However referee Mario Yamasaki ruled that Silva had hit Prater behind the head, forcing the knockout of Prater. This lead the disqualifaction of Silva and a vitory for Prater. The decision was controversial and Silva was paid his win bonus by the UFC.

Rousimar Palhares earned "Submission of the Night" with his heel hook victory over Mike Massenzio. Barboza took home two "Fight Night" bonuses. "Knockout of the Night" for his highlight reel KO of Terry Etim, and Barboza and Etim were awarded "Fight of the Night." Bonuses were $65,000 each.

The UFC is back tonight with its first card of 2012. Jose Aldo (20-1) defends his UFC Featherweight Title against undefeated challenger Chad Mendes (11-0). UFC 142 takes place at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Middleweights Vitor Belfort and Anthony Johnson clash in the co-main event.

The evening's action kicks off at 5:30 PM in Arizona with a featherweight bout between Felipe Arantes and Antonio Carvalho on Facebook. Just click "Like" on the UFC's Facebook page to view the bout.

At 6 PM the action switches over to FX, which as part of the new UFC/FOX deal will begin to air preliminary cards for UFC pay-per-views. Brazilians Thiago Tavares and Gabriel Gonzaga fight in separate bouts as part of the four fight card on the cable network.

At 8 PM the pay-per-view portion of the event begins. The card is stacked with mostly Brazilians (at least one in each of the five main card fights), former welterweight Anthony Johnson was supposed to make his middleweight debut at this event, however he failed to make weight and the fight will be fought at a catchweight with the condition being Johnson cannot weigh more than 205-pounds on fight night.

The evening culminates in a fight for the UFC featherweight Title. Chad Mendes, a former NCAA All-American wrestler, will look to dethrone UFC featherweight king Jose Aldo. Aldo has not lost a fight since 2005 and is on a 13-fight winning streak.

A report surfaced minutes before the weigh-ins that Johnson was nowhere near the absolute middleweight limit of 186 pounds. Johnson weighed in at 197 pounds, 11 pounds over the limit.

As of now the fight is still scheduled as Belfort agreed to the fight as long as Johnson is not over 205 pounds on fight night. Belfort weighed in at 186 pounds and got a roaring ovation from his hometown fans.

Jose Aldo is the best fighter in the world that some people have never heard of. Hardcore MMA fans have known Aldo since his days in the WEC, when he was beating up on fighters such as Urijah Faber, Mike Brown and Cub Swanson. Starting in 2011, UFC fans got a taste of what the best featherweight on the planet can do.

Times were not always so good for Aldo. He was raised in extreme poverty in Brazil and often would come to the gym to train without eating anything for days. His teammates would sometimes have to feed him so he could train.

Aldo made his professional debut in August of 2004 in his native Brazil. By October 2005 Aldo was 7-0 with seven finishes. Aldo was 10-1 when he was signed to the WEC and he made his American debut in June of 2008. Aldo spend little time going through the featherweight division, going 5-0 with five knockouts in a 12-month stretch.

Aldo (20-1) is undefeated as a featherweight and in November of 2009 won the WEC Featherweight Title with a TKO victory over Mike Brown. Aldo then made headlines with a five-round destruction of Urijah Faber in April of 2010 in his first title defense.

In 2011, all Aldo did was defeat top contender Mark Honinick (in Honinick's home country of Canada) and defeat longtime UFC contender Kenny Florian, both via unanimous decision. Aldo is 10-0 fighting in Zuffa (WEC, UFC).

There may not be much left for Aldo at 145-pounds. He has defended his WEC/UFC title four times and the UFC featherweight division is not terribly deep. Many believe that Aldo will bolt the featherweight division sooner rather than later for greener pastures at 155.

Potential super-fights with UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar or Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez loom for Aldo perhaps as early as summer 2012. Ben Henderson, Gray Maynard and Melvin Guillard are other names for Aldo if he and the UFC decide it is time for him to move up.

Aldo is ranked as the best featherweight in the world by every major MMA publication, including MMA Nation. Aldo is also ranked as a top five pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Not bad for a man who at one time in his life was going hungry in the streets of Brazil.
