After working him out on Tuesday and doing their due diligence on his troublesome knee, the Phoenix Suns have signed veteran SG Michael Redd, according to Arizona Sports.

Redd, 32, comes to a Phoenix squad in serious need of some extra bench scoring, bringing his 11 year’s of experience and 20 point carrer scoring average along with him.

"Michael Redd has a proven pedigree as a first-rate NBA scorer," said Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby. "He will work with our renowned training staff to get into basketball shape. When he is ready to play, Michael will be a welcome addition to our team."

Redd has had some major knee issues in the past, tearing his ACL and MCL in his left knee at the same twice in consecutive seasons, limiting his play to only 61 games over the past three seasons. Hopefully those injuries don’t become an issue is Phoenix.

An All-Star in 2004, Redd has finished in the top-11 in NBA scoring five separate seasons (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), as well as averaging 20 or more points in six-straight seasons (2003-09). He spent his previous 11 years with the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Phoenix Suns are getting off to a pretty slow start in the 2011-12 NBA season. And they look particularly weak in the shooting guard position. Jared Dudley is a solid enough bench player, but he can't be a starter and expect to put up big numbers and sustain that type of effort for an entire season. Shannon Brown has had a disastrous start, and has a lot of work to do if he plans on logging big minutes anytime soon.

So Phoenix went into the well and worked out former All-Star Michael Redd, and it looks like they're ready to sign him. Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic has more.

Michael Redd, who has a scary knee history, worked out for the Suns at US Airways Center on Tuesday, and the Suns are expected to sign the 32-year-old today to address their need for scoring and shooting.

Redd likely would not play immediately as he learns the Suns' system and works into playing shape.

Reed has been an outstanding shooter, but at 32 he's past his prime and struggling with how to cope with injuries. The Suns have done wonders with injured players before though, so it wouldn't be surprising if Redd enjoyed a mini-renaissance in the desert lands. Phoenix needs offense from the wing or otherwise Steve Nash will continue to struggle getting the offensive help he needs to thrive in Arizona.

The 32-year old Redd worked out at US Airways Center with free agent veteran Ime Udoka and free agent Gilbert Brown, though Coro feels Redd is the most appealing to the Suns.

Phoenix made sure to do their due diligence on Redd’s left knee, having it examined by team doctors on Tuesday as well due to his extensive history of problems with it. The former All-Star has played in a meager 61 games over the past three years along with two season-ending knee surgeries; Redd tore his ACL and MCL back in January of 2009 and once more a year later.

In the 10 games he did play in last year, Redd scored 4.4 points in 13.4 minutes for the Milwaukee Bucks. Luckily the Suns are known around the league to have a top notch medical staff who have lots of knowledge of dealing with aging stars such as Steve Nash, Grant Hill, and Shaquille O’Neal. Maybe Redd can reinvigorate himself in the desert as well.

The Phoenix Suns will reportedly workout 6-6 shooting guard / small forward Gilbert Brown, an undrafted rookie out of Pitt.

According to a report by Wendell Maxy of Beyond the Beat, 6-6 swingman free agent Gilbert Brown is in Phoenix and will work out with the Suns. Brown, 24, was in training camp with the Boston Celtics as an undrafted free agent before being cut.

Brown played five years with the Pitt Panthers and averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 rebonds and 2.7 assists while shooting 45.8 percent from the field his senior year.

Breaking: Gilbert Brown Goes From Germany To Boston To Working Out With Phoenix Suns
For those not familiar with Brown, the 6-foot-6 guard/small forward out of Pitt started his pro career with S. Oliver Wurzburg in Germany's Beko BBL before parting ways with the team in November. Brown and the team mutually decided to dissolve his one-year contract, leaving him a free-agent.

The Phoenix Suns haven't yet responded to a request for confirmation and Brown's agent declined to confirm or deny the report today.

Brown seems to think he was impressive when he worked out for the Suns before the draft.

"Hands down, I was the best player at every workout I had," Brown told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in June. "The one workout in Phoenix had Jordan Hamilton (selected 26th by the Mavericks) and Klay Thompson (selected 11th by the Warriors). I hit all of my shots, and no one could score on me. It was one of the best displays of my ability. A lot of people only had me as a defender and an athlete coming into the draft, but at these workouts I was able to show that I could do a lot more than what I did at Pitt. I showed I was able to score the basketball, and I was able to show them that I was an even better defender than what I showed in college."

It's not readily apparent why the Suns would need to add depth at shooting guard.

This story is still developing and subject to change.
