The 2012 Fiesta Bowl lived up and exceeded all billing. The 41-38 win for Oklahoma State came in overtime with a field goal that gave the Cowboys their first lead of the game. The Stanford Cardinal had the game all but won in regulation but their freshman kicker missed from 35 yards to force the overtime period. To compound matters, he missed again in OT to put the game in reach of Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys seem to only play well in even-numbered quarters. After generating little offense in the third (and first) quarter, Oklahoma State quickly moved down the field and tied the game at 31 on a touchdown pass to none other than, Justin Blackmon to open the fourth.

That was the third TD catch for the receiver who was reported to be limited by a nasty infection in his leg. The play went 17 yards from Brandon Weeden to Blackmon.

Stanford came right back as they had done so many times in this game and put another seven points on the board. The drive when 69 yards and used 13 plays and over seven minutes of clock. The touchdown, put the Tree up 38-31.

OSU wasn't done, however, as they quickly put together a touchdown drive in just 1:51. During the possession, the Cowboys went for it and converted a fourth and three at the OSU 40 with a 20 yard pass completion to Justin Blackmon.

The problem for the Cowboys, they left too much time on the clock for QB great, Andrew Luck. Stanford started on their own 20 with 2:35 on the clock. Luck drove to within a 35-yard field goal of victory. But as we've seen so many times in college football, kickers miss big kicks.

Overtime.

One their first possession of the extra period, the Cardinal offense went nowhere and Williamson missed another kick (43 yards) wide left. That put the game in the hands of the Cowboys who took their first lead of the game on a 25 yard touchdown pass to Colton Chelf except the play was reviewed and called down within one yard of the end zone.

Little matter, the Cowboys set up for a 19-yard kick to win the game 41-38.

The two teams certainly provided the offense we expected even after combining for just seven points in the first quarter. The Cardinal put up 590 total yards with Andrew Luck going 27-31 for 347 yards and two touchdowns in his final game before entering the NFL. The Cowboys had 412 yards with Weeden throwing for 399 yards, with three touchdowns on 29-42. His star receiver, Justin Blackmon had eight catches for 186 yards with three trips to the end zone.

The Stanford Cardinal head into the final quarter of the 2012 Fiesta Bowl with a 28-24 lead over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Cardinal scored on their only drive of the period, not including one that ended with a fumble at their own four-yard line.

The third quarter opened with the Oklahoma State Cowboys taking possession of the ball. They managed just one first down before the Cardinal defense recorded their first sack of the game on Cowboy QB Brandon Weeden and forced a punt. It was the first OKLA St. punt after finding the end zone on their last three possessions.

Andrew Luck and the Cardinal offense had more success on their first drive of the second half. Stanford drove 59 yards on eight plays before Luck found junior TE Zach Ertz for a 16 yard touchdown pass.

On their next possession the Cowboys again were stopped but they generated some good fortune by recovering a Cardinal fumble by FB Geoff Menken at his own four-yard line. In this game, however, they will probably need seven points and not the three they were left with after a dropped catch in the end zone on third down and goal.

Stanford has the ball on the OKLA St. 23 to start the fourth and final quarter.

Here's what that fumble looked like:

After a not-so-eventful first quarter in which only one touchdown was scored, the Cowboys and Cardinal exploded before halftime, totaling 35 points between the two offenses. Wide receiver Justin Blackmon has put his slow start in the rear-view mirror, totaling four catches, 139 yards and two long touchdowns. Andrew Luck has been solid with 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 11 of 14 passing but Brandon Weeden has been the better of the two, with 239 yards, three total touchdowns (one rushing) and one interception with 13 completions on 21 attempts.

Stanford jumped out to a 14-0 lead after Jeremy Stewart punched in from 24 yards away but that's when the beast was awoken. Putting all the "limited" talk to an end, Blackmon proceeded bust long receptions of 43 yards and 67 yards to tie the game back up.

Not to be outdone, Luck made passes of 25 yards and 31 yards look easy, setting up a Stepfan Taylor rushing touchdown from four yards out. That's when Oklahoma State went on their most efficient drive of the day to close out the half, totaling 77 yards and nine plays in less than two minutes and capping it off with a 2-yard Weeden quarterback draw.

The Cardinal have outrushed the Cowboys 144 yards to 11 and have held the ball for over 13 more minutes but are still tied due to Blackmons' big plays. Stay tuned for the second half as this one is sure to go down right to the wire.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are going to need all their weapons to defeat the powerful Stanford Cardinal in the 2012 Fiesta Bowl. Unfortunately, they enter the game with one of their best options limited by an infection. WR Justin Blackmon is a star who will be playing on Sundays, but in this game he's battling through the effects of an infection on his inner thigh according to a report on the ESPN TV broadcast.

According to the report, Blackmon has been taking heavy antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and was limited in practice during the week leading up to the game. He was advised to stay in bed and had his mobility reduced by the medical issues.

Blackmon has no receptions through the first quarter of play at the 2012 Fiesta Bowl after catching 113 passes for 1,336 yards this season for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Oklahoma State kept the matter secret throughout the week leading up to the big game.

[Update, 01/02/12 7:46 PM MST ]

Blackmon completed a 43-yard touchdown play to put the Cowboys on the board in the second quarter.

[Update, 01/02/12 8:03 PM MST ]

It would seem "limited" for Justin Blackmon means two catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Got it.

The offensive fireworks that were expected in this match up featuring Stanford and Oklahoma State haven't exactly appeared yet, at least through one quarter. Andrew Luck has been up and down with 68 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception on 4 of 6 throwing. Brandon Weeden hasn't looked like himself either through the first fifteen minutes completing 5-10 of his passes for only 26 yards and one interception.

Despite having the fourth overall offense, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy elected to defer after winning the coin toss. And it seemed at first, that his defense would reward him holding the Cardinal to a missed field goal and a three and out in their first two possessions. But the Cowboys couldn't take advantage as Weeden threw a pick on their first play then could muster nothing but a punt on their second drive.

When Luck got the ball back for the third time, he made the Cowboys pay, throwing a beautiful 53 yard strike to a wide open Ty Montgomery to put the first and only points on the board.

All didn't go Luck's way though, as he threw a pick to Justin Gilbert on a very alert play once he got the ball back. But yet, the Cowboys still couldn't get anything started as they were forced to punt the ball for the third time in four possessions as the first quarter came to a close.

The 41st annual Fiesta Bowl will kick off on Monday, January 2, 2012 from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The game will pit the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal against the No. 3 Oklahoma St. Cowboys. The Cowboys are favored to win by four points, but it is expected to be a competitive game between two evenly-matched teams.

Jon Wilner of the Mercury News provided some key points to look for regarding the strategy of the game in an article on Sunday. Wilner notes that the Stanford offense will need to control the ball and the clock and attempt to keep the potent Cowboys offense off the field for as long as possible. Stanford is certainly more than capable of keeping a stranglehold on a game, as they demonstrated in last year's Orange Bowl, when they racked up over 500 yards and 40 points and only punted three times in the game.

Wilner also notes that the performance of the Stanford tight ends will be vital in the game. Quarterback Andrew Luck has shown a definite preference in the 2011 season for his talented TEs, including Coby Fleener and Zach Ertz. If the tight ends can stay ahead of the Cowboys coverage, it could very well be off to the races for Stanford.
