Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan traded in his skates this offseason to film an appearance in the Science Channel's reality show, Mantracker. Doan and his brother Brook take to the Chilcotin Mountains of Gold Bridge, BC to evade the mounted people hunter on a two-day trek.
↵
If you've not seen the show, and really you should, it's features two contestants engaging in what we can only assume is a typical Canadian past time.
↵
The game involves a trained tracker, aka Mantracker, trying to chase down a pair of fleeing fools who are on foot.
↵
Mantracker (his real name doesn't matter) is a "highly trained forensic tracker" who wears a black cowboy hat and <strike>hipster </strike>silver beard. The "rabbits" are two people, normally Canadian people, drawn from all walks of life -- now including hockey.
↵
The show generally involves the following activities: trying without success to fool Mantracker by leaving misleading trails in the dirt; some mild conflict between the two rabbits (it is a Canadian show so don't expect Jersey Shore); hiding; running; more hiding; and at the end either one or both of the contestants reach their goal or Mantracker catches then and laughs heartily.
↵
The show airs at 7:00 p.m. local time on the Science Channel on Tuesday and then will repeat at least 35 times.
↵
Here's a little tease of the show.
The Phoenix Coyotes, still without young centerman Kyle Turris due to a contract holdout, were thin at that position. To address that need, General Manager Don Maloney traded a fourth round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft for center Cal O'Reilly from the Nashville Predators.

"We are very excited to bring Cal to our organization," said Maloney in a press release. "He is a young, highly skilled player who will help us at the center position. We look forward to having him in our lineup very soon."

Coyotes blogs Five for Howling is happy with the deal:

With similar production to another young center with potential that wants 3+, Cal seems like a deal to me.

Here's more on O'Reilly from the press release:

The 6-foot, 188-pound O'Reilly has appeared in five games with Nashville this season, collecting one assist and two penalty minutes (PIM). In 2010-11, he appeared in 38 games with the Predators, recording career highs in goals (6), assists (12) and points (18) in his first full season in Nashville.

The Toronto, Ontario native has recorded 11-24-35 and 10 PIM in 85 career regular season games with the Predators. He split the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons between the Predators and the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL), recording 22-87-109 and 28 PIM over those two seasons.

The 25-year-old recorded 56-197-253 and 70 PIM in 262 career regular season games with Milwaukee (AHL) from 2005-10. O'Reilly was drafted by Nashville in the fifth round (150th overall) in the 2005 Entry Draft.

You just can't escape the NHL power rankings, no matter how early it is in the season. Where do the Coyotes stand?

The Phoenix Coyotes are just barely into the NHL season, and are starting to gel and take shape as a cohesive unit. Somewhat similarly, hockey writers are scrambling to assemble power rankings, which they will use all season long to weigh how each teach is performing relative to one another. We'll check in on these power rankings from week to week in order to see what the world at large thinks about your Coyotes. Let's get started.

ESPN ranks the Coyotes at number 22 overall, which is fairly understandable at this point. They do an admirable job of explaining their decision and find the silver lining at the same time:

The Coyotes rank only 22nd in goals against per game; that's not a usual trademark for a Dave Tippett-coached team. Expect the Coyotes to tighten up here soon.

FOX Sports on MSN treats the Coyotes a bit better, placing them at number 21, ahead of the Edmonton Oilers, who have two more wins than Phoenix. Here's what FOX has to say:

The 'Yotes recalled Hobey Baker winner Andy Miele and promptly won a road game in Anaheim, 5-4. They’ll have their hands full with San Jose, Los Angeles, Dallas and Anaheim 32 times this season.

Finally, The Hockey News has Phoenix down at number 24 and points out the elephant in the room that we call the "near future":

Tough week ahead with home games against Stars, Devils, Kings

All three lists had the Washington Capitals firmly in the number one overall spot, and you certainly can't blame them.

The Coyotes will face the Kings on Saturday for the second time this season. They're hoping to fare better than the 2-0 loss they suffered last time.

The Phoenix Coyotes have been playing solid hockey through the opening weeks of the NHL season. They currently hold a 4-3-2 record and are trying to determine what works and how all the pieces fit together. On Saturday night, they will host a surprising Los Angeles Kings team. The division rivals come to town with behind their sensational goalie Jonathan Quick.

The first time these two teams met this season, Quick and the Kings treated the Coyotes to a 2-0 shutout. The Phoenix players are hoping to find an answer to the goaltender and respond with a win of their own.

The puck drops on Saturday night at 6:00 PM in Phoenix. The game is not being shown on local television, but you can listen to the broadcast on Xtra Sports 910 AM.

The Phoenix Coyotes needed a night where they could take a lead and finish off an NHL opponent. Thursday night at Jobing.com Arena, they got it.

The Coyotes also made their coach. Dave Tippett, look like a genius for changing up his personnel and creating different line combinations. The No. 2 line of left winger Ray Whitney, center Martin Hanzal and right winger Radim Vrbata turned in the top performance of the night in Glendale, Whitney scoring twice, Hanzal adding a goal and an assist and Vrbata a pair of assists in a 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Raffi Torres and Patrick O'Sullivan added goals for Phoenix (4-3-2) which won its second game in five at home so far this season.

O'Sullivan opened the scoring at the 13:42 mark of the first period, inadvertently kicking the pick in the crease as he was being knocked down. The puck hit a skate and another Devils' player and got past goaltender Johan Hedberg.

What followed was a four-minute replay review, but the goal counted.

The Devils tied it at the 14-minute, 15-second mark of the period (5:45 left with Zach Parise's backhand wrap-around into a clear net as Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith had mistakenly come out of the net.

Phoenix had its best first period of the season to date with 19 shots on goal.

Whitney got his first goal on a second-period power play, his fourth goal of the season, to tie the score at 2 after the Devils took their only lead. Torres put in a rebound off a shot by Daymond Langkow that was stopped, scoring with 48 seconds left in the period, and Phoenix went into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Third periods are where the Coyotes have struggled to put teams away and prevent comebacks. Not this time.

Whitney zipped up the left side and fed Hanzal for a shot and goal at the 7:44 mark of the period. Two minutes and 10 seconds later, Hanzal returned the favor, centering to Whitney for a shot between Hedberg's legs and into the net.

The Devils got a goal off a faceoff with six seconds to play to end the scoring.

The Phoenix Coyotes had the game in hand against the division-leading Dallas Stars. Up 2-1, goalie Mike Smith couldn't stop a late shot that tied the game. The Stars were able to win in a shootout and get the two points and the W while the Coyotes will have to settle for one point in the loss.

The Coyotes got on the board first when a Raffi Torres wrist shot found net at the 7:18 mark of the first period. Korpikoski and Ekman-Larsson were credited with assists on the play. It was Torres' first goal of the season.

Dallas fired back with a power play goal at 12:22 in the first with a slap shot from Sheldon Souray (asst. Benn and Ott).

Neither team scored in the second period and so the game remained tied 1-1 until Captain Coyote Shane Doan recorded his 300th career goal in the third (8:13, asst. Whitney, Langkow). The Coyotes were headed for a win until the Stars Adam Burish put one past Mike Smith with just a few minutes to go in the game.

After an scoreless overtime, the shootout went into the eighth round before Trevor Daley ended the contest. The Coyotes blew a late lead against the Stars in their earlier meeting in Big D.

Smith played well in the pipes, stopping 34 of 36 shots while the Stars Lehtonen was equally solid (33-35).

The Coyotes are in last place in the Pacific Division with eight points (3-4) while the Stars stay on top with 14 points (7-2).

The Coyotes remain at home and face the New Jersey Devils on Thursday. Official attendance was 6,948 for the Tuesday game in Glendale, AZ.

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Martin Hanzal scored two first-period goals, and the Phoenix Coyotes held on to beat the Anaheim Ducks, 5-4, at Honda Center. Keith Yandle and Lauri Korpikoski each had a goal and set up another for the Coyotes, who avoided their third loss in a row.

"We've had some bad games lately. We made sure we were ready tonight," Hanzal said.

Ryan Getzlaf tallied twice for Anaheim, which nearly overcame a three-goal deficit but wound up suffering their third straight home loss to its Pacific Division rival.

The Ducks made it interesting late as Getzlaf made it 5-4 with 1:08 remaining in the third period. With the Ducks' net empty, the Anaheim captain beat Phoenix goalie Mike Smith from between the circles with a sizzling wrist shot.

Both teams scored twice during an eventful first 20 minutes.

After Hanzal opened the scoring at 4:41, Lubomir Visnovsky and Getzlaf scored to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead.Corey Perry emerged from behind the net and found Visnovsky for a one-timer, then Getzlaf redirected Teemu Selanne's shot at 14:02.

Hanzal, though, unleashed a slap shot past Jonas Hiller to tie it up just 42 seconds later.

The Coyotes scored three times in a 3:09 span during the second period to put the Ducks in a 5-2 hole.

Boyd Gordon staked a claim in front of Hiller and tapped home Taylor Pyatt's feed from behind the net at 4:47. A bad giveaway in their own zone by the Ducks led to a goal for Korpikoski and Hiller was replaced by Dan Ellisafter Yandle lit the lamp at 7:56.

"That flurry of goals in the second period sunk our hockey club," said Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle. "We had our fair share of scoring chances, but we didn't execute and it cost us."

Kurtis Foster, in his Ducks debut, ripped a shot from the point to make it 5-3 with 6:29 remaining in the middle stanza. Foster scored four seconds after Hanzal finished serving a minor penalty for hooking.

The Phoenix Coyotes announced a minor trade on Saturday, sending Petteri Nokelainen and Garrett Stafford to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for center Brock Trotter and a seventh round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft. When rumor of a deal first leaked, some thought that Coyotes GM Don Maloney had pulled off a trade to get value back for holdout Kyle Turris. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

According to our friends at Five for Howling, the purpose of this trade is to free up space on the fourth line for hot prospect, Andy Miele. Miele was called up Friday and is expected to be in the line up on Sunday when the Coyotes face the Anaheim Ducks.

However, if Miele produces this season this move will be a net gain for the Yotes, regardless of how Trotter and the future 7th round pick pan out.

Here's more on Trotter from the official press release:

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Trotter has appeared in five games with the Hamilton Bulldogs (American Hockey League) this season, registering 2-5-7 and four penalty minutes. In 2010-11, he appeared in 49 games with Riga Dynamo (Kontinental Hockey League), recording 9-17-26 and 39 PIM.

The Brandon, Manitoba native recorded career highs in goals (36), assists (41), points (77) and PIM (56) in 75 regular season games with Hamilton (AHL) in 2009-10.
