Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he couldn't talk about the Dan Haren trade because it hadn't been approved by the commissioner. That was after the official press release went out. After Dan Haren talked about being traded to a competitive team. And minutes before Jerry Dipoto discussed the deal.

What Gibby would talk about was his frustration with getting swept by the Giants and losing yet another winnable game.

"You don't even know how frustrating it is," he said.

Maybe he didn't trust himself to talk for fear that his envy at Haren being moved to a winning club would come through.

There was more he wouldn't talk about regarding this game, as well.

"So many things go into that game for me ... There's certain things that I can't tell you because it would be stupid to tell you, just about some of the strategy," he said.

What could Gibson be talking about?

He got a great six-inning performance from his starter, Barry Enright, who said, "It's one of those games where you really have nothing, but you get through."

That, at least, was a bright spot for Gibby, who talked about that exact same thing - competing when you don't have your best stuff - before the game. He was describing Lincecum's intangibles at that time, so obviously he's pretty happy with his starter.

The bullpen wasn't a complete disaster. They gave the D-backs four innings of three-hit ball, giving up just one earned run. You can't ask for too much more than that, can you?

Enright swung the bat well, putting up a 2-for-2, two-RBI performance. I am guessing Gibson having his pitcher be the run producer wasn't in the plan, so that's a bonus, no?

Probably, Gibby is talking about the blown opportunity in the ninth inning, when the D-backs could have -- and should have -- won the game.

Facing Sergio Romo in place of ace Tim Lincecum, Steven Drew led off with the single. It was a base he earned with his effort, beating Ishiikawa to the bag. So far, so good.

Gerardo Parra then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the speedy Drew to second. Well done.

At that point, Gibby started inserting himself into the game in a more aggressive fashion. He pinch-hit Rusty Ryal for Augie Ojeda. Ryal's been hitting the ball well of late so ... bingo! Ground ball to shallow right advances Drew to third.

First and third, one out. Bottom of the ninth, tie game. Looking pretty good for pulling out a much-needed win.

Gibby elected to pinch-hit Cole Gillespie at this point instead of Mark Reynolds or Chris Snyder, who were available on his bench. Oh, OK. I see. You wouldn't want those power guys coming up to the plate in a situation where a sac fly wins the game. Right?

Gillespie struck out and then Young did, as well. Inning over. Game over.

Maybe there's a message being sent to some of those guys about being ready to play or not striking out or something else we can only speculate about. Only Gibby knows.

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) – Travis Ishikawa knocked in the winning run in the 10th inning to lift San Francisco over Arizona, 3-2, in the finale of a four-game set.

Sergio Romo (3-3) hurled a scoreless ninth for the win and Brian Wilson did the same in the 10th to earn his 29th save.

Esmerling Vasquez (1-3) took the loss after allowing the game-deciding hit.

Arizona’s defeat was overshadowed by a deal the club made with the Angels during the contest. Workhorse starter Dan Haren was shipped to the Halos in exchange for starter Joe Saunders, reliever Rafael Rodriguez, prospect hurler Patrick Corbin and a player to be named later.

Reynolds' rest

Mark Reynolds is getting the day off today, which will give him two days of rest with tomorrow's travel day.

"He's been grinding hard. Off the field, too - in the cage and stuff. We don't have great match-ups against this guy anyway and just thought this would be a good day," manager Kirk Gibson said of Reynolds, who might not be thrilled with the news. "He cares. He's been very motivated to get better. I know that."

Augie Ojeda will get the start at third.

Sam Demel - He's a good one, he's got the right stuff

Demel gave up a grand slam to Juan Uribe with two outs in the seventh inning of a what was a 3-1 game. He inherited two runners before walking Posey ahead of Uribe.

Gibson explained, "I don't think he felt like he executed his game plan against Posey and the pitch to Uribe - actually, I thought it was a fast ball, but I think it was cutter that backed up. He told me last night that hit cutter that usually cuts was backing up on him. That's a pitch designed to be on the outside of the plate and move off and it actually went back in. But if you look at it, it was a low pitch... pretty good location. You've got to give Uribe a little bit of credit for putting the stick on it."

Gibson is still high on Demel: "The kid works hard. He's got a pretty good idea. I know he's disappointed in his performance, but he's a good one. He's got the right stuff."

Lincecum's intangibles

Gibby talked about Lincecum's four pitches that he will throw at any time, but was most impressed with his other stuff: "He's very competitive. You can say all you want about his pitches, but his intangibles are probably his biggest attribute from what I see."

We will resist making the obvious pot-smoking joke here to avoid disrespecting the game.

(Sports Network) - Tim Lincecum tries to bounce back from a shaky effort his last time out when the San Francisco Giants close out a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Lincecum escaped without getting a decision on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but was hit for five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of his team's 7-5 win. The National League's reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner is 10-4 on the year with a 3.18 earned run average.

"I didn't bring my game to the table. I found myself battling every inning," Lincecum said after his last outing.

Lincecum did not get a decision in his last start against the Diamondbacks, but is 5-1 lifetime against them with a 2.36 ERA in 10 starts. His .833 winning percentage against them is his highest against any NL West opponent.

San Francisco won its third straight game on Saturday, as Juan Uribe hit his fourth career grand slam andAubrey Huff stayed hot, helping the Giants to a 10-4 rout.

Rookie Buster Posey also extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

In Friday's contest, Huff went 3-for-5 with two home runs, and he followed that with another 3-for-5 performance Saturday. Huff drove in two runs for the Giants, who have won 10 of their last 12.

Another win today would five the Giants their second four-game sweep of the month on the road, but their first in Arizona since turning the trick from July 26-29, 2003. San Francisco swept the Milwaukee Brewers in a four-gamer from July 5-8 at Miller Park.

Madison Bumgarner (4-2) took the win after limiting Arizona to two runs on five hits and three walks in seven innings. He also struck out seven as he won his fourth consecutive start.

While the Giants won, outfielder Eugenio Velez was injured in the fourth inning while in the dugout, as he was struck in the head by a foul ball off Pat Burrell's bat. Velez fell to the ground and, after being attended to by trainers, was carried off on a stretcher and taken to a hospital, where he will remain overnight.

"CT scan was negative," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He took a pretty good shot on the left side of the head. Don't know exactly where, but it hit him pretty good. But he never lost consciousness, and he's doing fine now."

Ian Kennedy (5-8) gave up four runs in 6 2/3 innings to take the loss for Arizona, which has lost six in a row to the Giants.

Arizona will pin its hopes on rookie right-hander Barry Enright, who is 2-2 with a 2.66 ERA. Enright was impressive in beating the New York Mets on Tuesday, as he held them to a run and five hits in eight innings. He also struck out eight, while walking a batter.

"I was attacking hitters from the beginning," Enright said. "The first two guys got on, but I never lost that aggressiveness."

This will be his first-ever start against the Giants.

San Francisco leads the 2010 season series with Arizona by a 6-2 margin, and is 19-7 over the past 26 meetings between the two ball clubs.
