The July 31 MLB Trade Deadline is just over a month away and the cellar-dwelling D-backs are widely considered to be heavy players in the market. As sellers.

The rumors begin with a couple of teams scouting ace RHP Dan Haren:

Mike Silva's New York Baseball Digest " Blog Archive " Yanks Scouting Haren?
Ken Rosenthal believes Arizona won’t be able to keep both Edwin Jackson and Dan Haren in a deal since combined they make $20 million and there are reports the team is in cost cutting mode.

One surprise from Rosenthal is his sources stating that Haren isn’t "at the top of anyone’s list" and is "just another name." If that is the case, knowing how hard lined teams are with prospects, will Arizona have to give away Haren? If so, this is a clear opportunity for either local team to swoop in and buy low on someone that has top of the rotation stuff.

Haren rumors - The Boston Globe
Dan Haren, RHP, Diamondbacks — Scouts from the Yankees, Twins, Nationals, Cardinals, and Tigers all came out to watch his last start, a 9-3 loss to the Yankees in which he went seven innings and allowed six hits and three runs.

It will be interesting to see whether the Diamondbacks wind up dealing their best starter and whether anyone will break the bank to get him.

Since being traded to the Tampa Bay (Not Devil) Rays, Chad Qualls has continued to be Chad Qualls, putting up these numbers: 6.57 ERA in 12.1 Innings over 16 games.

Most D-backs fans were so ready to get rid of Qualls, they would have been fine paying the Rays to take him and been thrilled with the proverbial bag of balls.

Instead, though, interim general manager Jerry Dipoto managed to get back a real live pitcher to in the form of 23-year-old right-handed Matt Gorgen.

Gorgen has a career ERA of 1.45 five in three years of minor league play, totaling 142.1 innings in Single A and Double A ball.

According to the website Rays Prospects, "his fastball isn’t overpowering, sitting in the 91-92 range, but he throws a good change-up and has flashed plus breaking pitches."

Official Release

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Matt Gorgen from the Tampa Bay Rays to complete the July 31 trade for right-handed pitcher Chad Qualls, according to D-backs’ interim General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

Gorgen, 23, went 3-2 with 22 saves, a 1.65 ERA (9 ER in 49.0 IP) and a .191 opponents average (34-for-178) with 21 walks and 47 strikeouts over 42 games with Double-A Montgomery this season. He led the Southern League with 37 games finished and tied for the league lead in saves en route to being named a Southern League All-Star. Over parts of three seasons in the Rays farm system, he went 11-4 with 54 saves, a 1.45 ERA (23 ER in 142.1 IP) and a.167 opponents average (83-for-496) with 55 walks and 159 strikeouts in 108 games.

It's official: Chris Snyder is gone.

According to the venerable Jack Magruder, the Pirates are paying $3 million of Snyder's salary.

Press release from team:

(PHOENIX) - The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have acquired outfielder Ryan Church, infielder Bobby Crosby and right-handed pitcher D.J. Carrasco from the Pittsburgh Pirates for catcher Chris Snyder, infielder Pedro Ciriaco and cash considerations, according to D-backs' interim General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

Church, 31, has a .264 batting average with 54 home runs, 129 doubles, 7 triples and 260 RBI in seven Major League seasons with the Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Atlanta Braves and Pirates from 2004-10. He batted .183 with 3 home runs, 11 doubles, a triple and 18 RBI in 68 games this season for the Pirates. Church, who was signed by the Pirates as a free agent on Jan. 13, 2010, has a .993 fielding percentage with 29 outfield assists as an outfielder during his career.

Crosby, 30, compiled a .237 batting average with 62 home runs, 144 doubles, 8 triples and 274 RBI in eight Major League seasons with the Oakland Athletics and Pirates. He was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 2004 after leading AL rookies with 22 home runs, 64 RBI, 70 runs scored, 130 hits, 34 doubles, 58 walks, 232 total bases and 57 extra-base hits. Crosby also garnered AL Rookie Player of the Year honors from The Sporting News and received the Players Choice Award as the league's Outstanding Rookie that same year after becoming just the fourth big league rookie to hit 20 or more home runs as a shortstop. He batted .224 with a home run, 8 doubles and 11 RBI in 61 games this season for the Pirates. Crosby was signed by the Pirates as a free agent on Dec. 10, 2009.

Carrasco, 33, has a 22-18 record and 4.37 ERA in 226 games (23 starts) in six Major League seasons with the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox and Pirates from 2003-10. Since the beginning of 2009, he leads all big league relievers with 145.0 innings pitched. The right-handed pitcher compiled a 2-2 record and 3.88 ERA (24 ER in 55.2 IP) with 22 walks and 45 strikeouts in 45 appearances this season and has held opponents to 1 run or less in 40 of his 45 contests. He has limited right-handed hitters to a .260 average (229-for-881) over the course of his career. Carrasco was signed by the Pirates as a minor league free agent on Jan. 20, 2010.

Snyder, 29, batted .231 with 10 home runs, 8 doubles and 32 RBI in 65 games this season for the D-backs. He hit safely in a career-high-tying 9 straight games from April 19-30, over which he batted .324 (11-for-34) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 7 RBI and a .647 slugging percentage. Snyder compiled a .233 batting average with 62 home runs, 86 doubles, a triple and 240 RBI in seven seasons with the D-backs from 2004-10. The catcher was the club's second-round selection in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Houston.

Ciriaco, 24, batted .259 with 6 home runs, 15 doubles, 7 triples and 51 RBI in 87 games this season for Triple-A Reno. He entered the 2010 season ranked by Baseball America as having the organization's best infield arm for the fourth consecutive season. In 2009, he was named to the regular season and end-of-season Southern League All-Star teams after finishing second in the league with 38 stolen bases and fourth with 149 hits. Ciriaco compiled a .277 batting average with 23 home runs, 115 doubles, 35 triples and 302 RBI in seven seasons in the D-backs organization. He was signed by the D-backs as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 28, 2003.

When Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall was on KTAR radio recently he talked about his plans for rebuilding the Diamondbacks.

He was refreshingly candid about cutting salary and said this about team chemistry, "There's going to be a few moves that we want to make that are addition by subtraction."

I am going to go out on a (fairly strong) limb and suggest that trading Chris Snyder to the Pirates is what he was talking about. Chris isn't exactly known as a strong clubhouse guy and of course with Miggie (Montero) back from injury and playing well there's no need to keep Chris' attitude and salary around.

Have fun in Pittsburgh, one of only two teams with a record worse than the D-backs.

Making this trade even better is the return of legit, real-life reliever, D.J. Carrasco, 31, who's thrown 55 2/3 innings for the Pirates with an ERA of 3.88 and a WHIP of 1.293. His contract for this season is only $950,000 and the D-backs retain his rights for the next two years.

Even better, Carrasco was born in Safford, AZ so when his family and friends comes to see him play the team will benefit from the additional attendance.

The D-backs are taking on some portion of Snyder's salary (totally worth it to dump him) and are reportedly also including a Minor League player <strike>who has yet to be identified</strike> Pedro Ciriaco. As long as that's not a top prospect, this will likely turn out to be my favorite deal of the bunch for the reason's Hall stated above.

Also coming over from the Pirates are two bench players who aren't doing all that much this season.

Ryan Church, 31, is left-handed outfielder hitting just .182 in 183 plate appearances. Church is under contract for $1.5 million this season and has one more year of arbitration eligibility.

Bobby Crosby, 30, is a right-handed utility infielder who's hitting .224 in 175 plate appearances this season. Crosby hit 22 home runs in 2004 but hasn't cracked 10 in a season since and has one this year. Just saying. Crosby is on a $1 million contract for this year and will be a free agent after the season mercifully ends.

It's not clear what the D-backs will do with either of this guys but if taking them was the price of getting Carrasco and moving Snyder, then so be it.

This deal isn't official yet so keep your fingers crossed.

UPDATE: According to Baseball America, the Diamondbacks are sending Triple-A infielder Pedro Ciriaco to the Pirates in this deal. Here's what they say about him:

Ciriaco has some top-of-the-line tools in his speed and defensive ability. He has yet to put it all together offensively, which made him expendable for the Diamondbacks.

A career .279/.314/.355 hitter entering the season in 2,729 minor league at-bats, Ciriaco has yet to play in the majors since signing in 2003 as a 17-year-old. He got off to a slow start due in part to a ligament injury in his thumb, but he heated up in June and July, hitting a combined .295.

Scouts report Ciriaco's speed, defense and throwing arm remain above-average, and his speed rates a 70 on the 20-80 scale. However, he has little power and is too free of a swinger to get on base enough to become a consistent factor as a basestealer.

The Diamondbacks have managed to not only trade Chad Qualls for a player to be named later, but got the Tampa Bay (not Devil) Rays to take on the rest of his salary.

That's what teams in a pennant race do. They take a flyer on a guy who's having a horrible year, but whose stuff still seems to be there. A guy with a long and impressive career track record.

For the Diamondbacks, Qualls personifies all that's gone wrong this season with the bullpen and there is little chance of fan backlash at this particular salary dump.

AZ Snakepit will have all the fan <strike>celebration </strike>reaction.

Here's the official press release on Qualls.

(PHOENIX) - The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have traded right-handed pitcher Chad Qualls to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later, according to D-backs' interim General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

Qualls, 31, has a 30-26 ERA and 3.74 ERA in 433 games in seven Major League seasons with the Houston Astros and D-backs from 2004-10. The right-hander had a 1-4 record and 8.29 ERA (35 ER in 38.0 IP) with 12 saves, 15 walks and 34 strikeouts in 43 games for the D-backs this season. His career-high 24 saves in 2009 rank sixth on the D-backs' single-season list, while his 1.21 walks per 9.0-innings ratio and 6.43 strikeouts-to-walks ratio led all Major League relievers. Qualls was acquired by the D-backs, along with Chris Burke and Juan Gutierrez, from the Astros on Dec. 14, 2007.

The Diamondbacks didn’t get much sleep Friday night, putting together a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates for Chris Snyder, which is now pending approval by the commissioner's office.

It is not clear what the D-backs would get in return or how much money is changing hands in the deal, but that is what would have to be approved by Major League Baseball.

Snyder is due $5.75 million next year with a club option worth $6.75 million for 2012 with a $750,000 buyout.

Snyder is hitting .231 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs in 65 games this year.It

The D-backs front office also has somehow convinced the Tampa Bay Rays to take on Chad Qualls and his entire contract, for the ubiquitous PTBNL.

The D-backs will not have to include any cash in the deal with the Rays picking up the roughly $1.6 million Qualls is owed for the rest of the season.

Arizona has actively shopped Qualls, who began the year as the team’s closer, but has struggled to find any consistency and is 1-4 with an 8.51 ERA in 42 games.
