NBA Playoff Picture: Loss To Spurs Doesn't Sink Suns Just Yet

The Phoenix Suns suffered a tough loss on Saturday night to the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs, true to their track record this season, trounced the Spurs, 105-91. Although the loss drops the Suns 1.5 games behind the cutoff line for playoff berths in the Western Conference, there is still hope of making the postseason.

The Sun are now 31-29 and are chasing the current No. 7 and No. 8 seeds in the conference, respectively held by the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets. Both the Rockets and Nuggets hold 32-27 records and are 11.5 games behind the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder. The Suns are currently 13 games back and have six gamed remaining, including a game against the Nuggets.

The Nuggets and Rockets have a home-and-home two-game series against one another on Sunday and Monday, so the Suns should be rooting for Houston to take both games. This way, the Suns could potentially slip ahead of the Nuggets with a win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday and just hold pace until they play Denver next Saturday. That seems to be the most direct route for the Suns, although there are alternatives.

The loss to the Spurs on Sunday was not the end of the world, but it does make the margin for error tighter. Phoenix will be watching the home-and-home between the Nuggets and Rockets closely.
