Suns Vs. Warriors reaction: Bright Side of the Sun blames the pick and roll, poor shooting for Suns loss

The Phoenix Suns dropped their season opener to the Golden State Warriors 87-85 on Wednesday night, and SB Nation's own Seth Pollack of Bright Side of the Sun posits that the team's insistance on running the pick and roll combined with some horrible outside shooting cost them.

The Suns shot 40 percent from the field and an abysmal 19 percent from three-point range and couldn't manage to knock off a Warriors squad that had serious shooting woes of their own, shooting 38.4 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from three-point range.

According to Pollack, the Suns inability to knock down open threes killed them.

I also remember [Goran] Dragic and [Marcin] Gortat trying to run middle pick and roll but with [Luis] Scola out behind the three-point line angle right where [Channing] Frye normally chills. When the defense collapsed, they kicked to the open Scola who doesn't shoot threes like Frye. Miss.

Another time running the pick and roll they kicked to [P.J.] Tucker on the left wing who missed a wide open long jump shot (he's not a jump shooter either).

So, basically, the Suns tried to run their old pick and roll plays that were so effective in 2010 when Frye, [Jared] Dudley and J-Rich were lights out floor spacers but with with guys who are not lights out floor spacers. Shockingly, that didn't work.

The Suns will hope to correct their woeful three-point shooting and perhaps rely less on an offensive shceme that they're not particularly cut out for any more when they take on the Detroit Pistons at 7 p.m. PT on Friday.
