Jimmer Fredette To Phoenix Suns? Not So Fast

Jimmer Fredette has been anointed the NBA's Tim Tebow, for some reason. The most logical guess? That he will be drafted way too soon, just like Timmy Touchdown was by the Denver Broncos.

In all seriousness, Fredette is a great story. His scoring guile is unmatched, and to take a school like BYU to such great heights was a legendary feat. Does this mean he's worth taking with the 13th pick in the NBA Draft? All signs point to "probably not."

The Phoenix Suns just don't need Jimmer. True, this is a very weak draft by any standard, and that increases the chance that a team will take a player on name recognition alone. Fredette would likely be very well received by the Phoenix media, and casual fans used to seeing an undersized white guy running around the court wouldn't even notice if Steve Nash was in the game or not.

Fact of the matter, Jimmer Fredette won't help this version of the Suns become any better. There is a big hole at the shooting guard position, and both Nash and Grant Hill are reaching the end of their careers. If your plan is to develop Fredette into a point guard, he might be a good pick here, but in my mind he would play best off the ball with a bigger PG (heck, someone as tall as LeBron James).

I'd like to see Jimmer become an NBA legend, but based on what we've seen, he's not a safe pick for the Phoenix Suns in 2011. I wouldn't be surprised if he was off the board by the time we select, however. He just has that aura about him.
