Phoenix Mercury Select Colorado's Brittany Spears In 2nd Round Of WNBA Draft

The Phoenix Mercury with their second round pick (19th overall) selected guard/forward Brittany Spears from Colorado. Spears was on the 2010-11 All-Big 12 First team and is first in scoring and field goal attempts in Colorado school history.

"I'm just really excited to have chance to play at the next level," Spears said on a conference call immediately after the pick was announced. "I just know that they have great players and are fast break team, a quick team."

Phoenix Mercury Coach Corey Gaines made it pretty clear what Spear's role would be.

"Second round pick, it's tough, but we tried to do the best we could with it," he said. "We have a lot of bigs coming into training camp so we want Diana and Penny to have some sort of rest in training camp."

Gaines called Spears the best available talent on the board for the need he has. At 6-1, Spears can play either the shooting guard or small forward in camp and provide a practice player for the team as they prepare for the season.

The Mercury have one more pick in the draft, the 31st overall pick which comes in the third round.

No word if newly drafted Brittany Spears can sing, but based on twitter the goofy name references to the former pop star have already started.
