NHL: Phoenix Coyotes (NEARLY) Clinch Playoff Spot!

During the 10 months that SB Nation Arizona has been open for business, Arizona sports have been rather miserable. Outside of an Arizona basketball run to the Elite Eight (which is not a good thing for those who cheer for ASU), nothing good has happened this entire time!

And tonight, we watch the sorrow continue. The Phoenix Coyotes almost clinched a spot in the 2011 NHL Playoffs after nearly defeating the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center. The Western Conference has been incredibly competitive this season, with ten teams eclipsing 90 points to create a lot of tension and drama in the final weeks of play.

The Coyotes had to take it to overtime... then to a busy shootout frame... and then they lost. Sure, they earned a point tonight. Dallas has to win their final three games, and Phoenix has to lose both of their remaining games in order to fall out of the playoffs. We're SO close, Phoenix fans! This stuff only makes us stronger, right?

Even without a solid ownership situation or a devout fanbase, the Coyotes excelled during the stretch run, winning 8 of their last 11 games. The game tonight had the air of a playoff matchup, with both teams having the chance to lock up their playoff spot with a win.

Dear God, let the Coyotes do well in the playoffs this year. Give SB Nation Arizona something positive to write about.
