There were two goals in the second period but unfortunately for the Coyotes, it was one per side and that's not how you make up a three-goal deficit. The period opened with a quick goal by the Red Wings as the home team dominated play and looked like they had the Desert Dogs ready to scamper home with their tails between their legs. But the Coyotes woke up and fought like corned dogs and at least managed to get on the board and play better for the rest of the period.
Thomas Holmstrom scored just 1:11 into the period on a tip-in with assists to Filppula and Datsyuk. Holmstrom snuck behind an inattentive defense for a clean tip in front of the net.
The Coyotes got in the scoring column with a power play goal by Radim Vrbata off a Keith Yandle pass. Vrbata's shot went between the defenders legs and snuck into the side of the net.
