Walk-on junior Jon Mora will be the Arizona State Sun Devils' field goal kicker against the UCLA Bruins rather than sophomore Alex Garoutte, according to Tyler Lockman of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Mora replaced Garoutte two games ago against Colorado following an 1-for-4 performance by Garoutte in the previous week against the California Golden Bears. Mora converted a 38-yarder, his only attempt, but Garoutte reclaimed the starting job against the Oregon Ducks last week, where he missed a 43-yard field goal.
ASU special teams cooridnator Joe Lorig told FOXSportsArizona.com that the situation isn't ideal:
"I don't think it's good," Lorig said. "Any time you have a clear-cut guy, that's the best situation, but up to this point no one's really stepped up to be that clear-cut guy, so we've just had to make a decision based on practice. It's going to be Jon Mora the rest of the time."
Lorig hinted that the job will be up for grabs on a weekly basis.
They have yet to win or lose on a field goal, their closest game being a 24-20 loss at Missouri. Still, the lack of a consistent kicking game has hurt the Sun Devils, who have been put in situations where head coach Todd Graham has decided to punt or go for it on fourth downs instead of attempting a long field goal.
