Arizona vs. Toledo: Matt Scott Leads Wildcats To Wild 24-17 Overtime Win

The Arizona Wildcats won their first game of the Rich Rodriguez era on Saturday night. It wasn't always pretty and there are still plenty of concerns that surround the team, but a win is a win and it was a solid start to UA's 2012 campaign.

In a game that required overtime to be finalized, Arizona came out with the 24-17 win.

Matt Scott was the star of the show, throwing for 387 yards and two touchdowns, all while scrambling for 74 yards. Sophomore running back KaDeem Carey rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore wide receiver Austin Hill led the way with seven receptions, 139 yards and a touchdown score.

The Wildcats led 3-0 after the first quarter. In what would be a theme throughout the night, Arizona reached the red zone twice and failed to reach the end zone. The first drive resulted in a 26-yard field goal, while a fumbled halted the other.

Toledo scored the first touchdown of the game, taking a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter. Scott then connected with Hill on their next possession to give UA a 10-7 lead once again. The Rockets responded quickly though, converting on another long drive to go up 14-10.

With the score tied 17-17 and just two seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Arizona lined the ball up and attempted a 31-yard field goal. John Bonano, who was a pleasant surprise for the Wildcats last season, shanked the kick left and forced overtime.

On third down and goal, Scott came up with the play of the game. The senior quarterback scrambled in the backfield to avoid pressure, attempting to direct traffic while running for his life. Scott dodged a would-be tackler near the sideline, planted his feet and completed a 10-yard strike to Terrence Miller to give Arizona a touchdown lead.

Toledo was unable to score on their overtime possession, securing the 24-17 win for the Wildcats.
