Arizona Bowl Projections: Fiesta Bowl, Insight Bowl, and BCS National Championship Game

New, 1 comment

Metropolitan Phoenix hosts two bowls annually: the Fiesta Bowl and the Insight Bowl. Every four years, Arizona is also treated to the BCS National Championship Game, and 2011 happens to be one of those years. With that in mind, let's take a look at who is projected to play in these bowls.

Note: these projections are based on current BCS standings and guesswork. Feel free to disagree with me as you see fit.

First off, the Insight Bowl, which hosts the third choice from the Big 12 and the fourth choice from the Big Ten. The game will be played at Sun Devil Stadium on December 28. Currently, SB Nation Arizona projects that the Oklahoma Sooners will win the Big 12 championship game, pushing Oklahoma St. into the Alamo Bowl, and landing the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Tempe.

When it comes to the Big Ten, the conference is very top-heavy, with three teams that finished 11-1. Two of them will be playing in BCS bowls, while a third (possibly the Michigan St. Spartans) will end up in the Capital One Bowl. After that, the Insight Bowl gets to make its selection, and I fully anticipate the Michigan Wolverines and their huge fanbase to get the nod.

Insight Bowl: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Michigan Wolverines. Not bad, huh?

Next, we look at the Fiesta Bowl. They will take the Big 12 champion (Oklahoma Sooners) and will be left with either the Big East champion (Connecticut Huskies) or the Stanford Cardinal, depending on who the Orange Bowl picks.

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma Sooners vs. Connecticut Huskies. The Big East strikes again.

Finally, we are left with the BCS title game. One thing we know for sure: the Oregon Ducks will be playing. The only question remaining is whether or not the Auburn Tigers will defeat the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC Championship game. Right now, with Cam Newton eligible to play, it looks like the Tigers will go undefeated in regular season play.

BCS National Championship Game: #1 Auburn Tigers vs. #2 Oregon Ducks. This will be a game for the ages, to be sure.

There you have it, folks. Feel free to disagree with this analysis in the comments section.
