Sun Devils Attendance: Will Phoenix Fans Show For Oregon?

New, 1 comment

Phoenix sports fans are quite fickle with their sports spending. It's difficult for any team in the valley to easily sell tickets, which hurts both collegiate recruiting and the allure for free agents to sign professional contracts. The Suns are the only exception to this rule, but the recent resurgence of the Cardinals have also put them in this category.

Last weekend, the Arizona State Sun Devils put forth their best effort in years, dueling Wisconsin for four quarters and losing by the slightest of margins. The end result was the same as expected, but the feeling was different: ASU has a respectable football team once again.

With 20 minutes to go before kickoff against the 5th-ranked Oregon Ducks, however, you sure wouldn't know it. The upper deck is mostly empty, save for the visiting section which has filled up moreso than some lower level seating.

The weather was certainly warm today, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and the sun bearing down on the desert. But a team like ASU should not have to worry about attendance problems. Not after playing Wisconsin so closely. Not when Oregon, a team with a renowned offense, is coming to town.

Hopefully my alarm is premature, and legions of fans are just enjoying one last bratwurst before heading into the stadium. Word on the street is that there will be roughly 60,000 fans here tonight. Hopefully that is enough to motivate the Sun Devils to the upset.
