Arizona Wildcats senior kicker John Bonano was named the 2012 Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Thursday. Bonano, attending Arizona on an honors academic scholarship, is majoring in physiology and has a 3.927 GPA. Formerly the team's kickoff specialist, the senior took over the placekicking for the final seven games of 2011 and all of 2012. This season, he is fifth in the Pac-12 in scoring and first among all kickers, averaging 7.9 points per game.
In 2012, Bonano has made 51 of his 52 PATs, and 14 of 20 field goals. Prior to last weekend's game against the Sun Devils, he had made 73 straight point after attempts. He even chipped in a two-point conversion in last weekend's 41-34 loss to rival Arizona State. The 14 made field goals places him second in the Pac-12.
Bonano, a 2011 and 2012 Pac-12 All-Academic honoree, is currently applying to medical school.
