After the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Monday night, it was announced that the team had traded minor league right-handed pitcher Barry Enright to the Los Angeles Angels for cash and a player to be named later. Enright was 8-6 at Triple-A Reno with an ERA of 5.87.
It marked the end of an era for a player that won over fans in his short time in the major leagues.
In parts of two seasons in the majors, he started 24 games, going 7-11. But how he started was great. In 2010, he started off 6-2 and had a 2.45 ERA. His winning and his red hair and beard started the "Fear the beard" theme that Ian Kennedy became a part of.
Enright was popular, seemed to be successful with smoke and mirrors, as he did not have the best stuff and relied on location for his success. Unfortunately, after that 6-2 start to his career, he only won one more game in two seasons. He became rather prone to the home run and hasn't had another chance since early 2011.
Here at this site, he became our folk hero. He was Barry the Red. So it is with sadness and hope for his career that we say goodbye. Enright gets a fresh start with a new team, and that is good. He was likely going to be a career minor leaguer with Arizona, so heading to the Angels is what he needed.
So, we wish Barry luck. We want to see that red beard in the majors again.
