Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton will not play tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates as he continues to rest his ailing thumb. Upton injured the thumb trying to break up a double play in the series finale against the Giants on April 8th.
"He's not swinging the bat well, I think it hurts him," said Kirk Gibson about Upton. "He went and saw Dr. Sheridan, the hand specialist, and we will wait and see what he says," said Gibson.
Upton has a batting average of .212 this season and does not have a home run or an RBI in 2012. Upton went 0-4 last night against the Pirates.
"We just went with a different lineup today to give him a break," said Gibson. According to Gibson, Upton will have an MRI on the injured thumb while visiting the Diamondbacks' hand specialist, Dr. Paul Sheridan.
Into the lineup steps Gerardo Parra. Parra has five hits in his last ten at-bats, including two RBI and three runs scored in that span.
