MLB Standings: Diamondbacks postseason hopes dashed this past weekend

The Arizona Diamondbacks watched their postseason hopes die Friday evening when the Cardinals defeated the Nationals.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were officially eliminated from postseason contention this past weekend with the St. Louis Cardinals' 12-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday.

The D-backs (80-79) only had the second Wild Card to hope for after San Francisco locked up the division in the prior week, but the Cardinals (86-73) ultimately ran away with it. The Los Angeles Dodgers (84-75) are the only team left with a chance of stealing the spot, but that also seems unlikely as they sit two games back with only three to play.

The D-backs are also stuck in third place in the NL West with the Dodgers being four games up with three games left on tap. Arizona will finish out the year with three home games against the Colorado Rockies as they look to remain above .500 for a second-consecutive season.

At the start of the week, Arizona is 13 games behind the San Francisco Giants (93-66) in the division.
