Roberts' Eighth Inning Homer Ignites Late Charge, D-backs Stun Giants 4-1

The comeback kids are alive and cracking in the month of September. After being blanked through the first seven innings of Sunday's game, the Diamondbacks' unsung hero, Ryan Roberts, crushed a shot to deep left field to ignite a late-game charge and give Arizona a stunning 4-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Giants' right-hander Ryan Vogelsong dominated the snakes for much of the game, allowing just three hits for the opening seven innings of the game while depriving any D-backs runner a chance to pass first base. However, that command would meet an abrupt end, as Roberts' spectacular shot was immediately matched by four consecutive Arizona batters reaching base, highlighted by a two-run triple from Willie Bloomquist that dazed an already shell-shocked San Francisco crowd.

David Hernandez carried the Diamondbacks to the finish line with a perfect 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth, and J.J. Putz slammed the door for his 36th save of the season.

Daniel Hudson pitched a gem of his own, matching Vogelsong inning for inning after giving up a lead-off homerun to Cody Ross. The young right-hander picked up his 15th win of the season, giving up just one run and three hits over seven superb innings of work.

After losing the series-opener against San Francisco, the Diamondbacks stormed back for two consecutive victories to claim the series win, 2-1, and push their stunning NL West lead to a season-high seven games, with just 22 games left to play.

Next up for Arizona (80-60) is a three-game divisional tilt at the Colorado Rockies before heading home for a four-game set against San Diego Padres. Rookie left-hander Wade Miley (2-1, 3.94 ERA) opens the series against Colorado's Esmil Rogers (6-4, 5.94 ERA). First pitch is at 12:10 p.m. PT/3:10 p.m. ET.
