Paul Goldschmidt joined the ranks of major league baseball players in Monday's Diamondbacks win over the Giants. In his first at-bat, Goldschmidt smacked a ball to right field that should have also platted a run if the umpire had made a made the right call at second base earlier in the inning.
↵That turned out to be his only hit of the game but he played a solid first base and seemed to keep a level head about the whole thing.
↵"It was good to get a win in a tight division race. As for me personally, it was a good first game. It was fun. Hopefully, we go out and get 'em tomorrow," Goldschmidt said after the game without a hint of excitement in his voice.
↵Manager Kirk Gibson, not exactly known for hyperbolic statements, seemed more fired up than his young player, "To be honest with you, I'm envious... It's going to be an awesome experience. It's going to be the start of his career, he's going up against the best in a great environment somewhat hostile towards opponents. It's good stuff. It's good time fun."
↵Goldschmidt, 23, made the jump from Double-A ball straight to the majors and got the start in his first game against the World Champion Giants on the road. Good stuff indeed.
↵Now we wait and see if the kid is for real or if he joins a long line of first base prospects in the D-backs organization. Travis Lee, Lyle Overbay, Erubiel Durazo, and Conor Jackson have all gone before Goldschmidt and they are all gone.
↵Hopefully, this young prospect sticks and give the D-backs a solid, long-term player at first. Only time will tell.
