With the news that Brandon Allen is returning to the big league club, the Diamondbacks were likely to make another roster move today -- Geoff Blum is ready to take his spot on the 25 man roster.

An offseason free agent signing, Blum has been sidelined all year with a knee injury that resulted in surgery. Last November, I waxed poetic on his time as a Montreal Expo, hopeful that Blum would make an impact in his final few MLB seasons.

Blum is a very useful bat off the bench. He fills a very similar role to Willie Bloomquist, and is reminiscent of a Mickey Morandini, Jamey Carroll-type player that can play any number of positions in a pinch.

Last season, as a member of the Houston Astros, Blum played all four infield positions. As recently as 2007, he played left field. While he will be used as an infielder in Arizona, Blum can be of great use to Kirk Gibson as he plays the matchups.

Expect to see Juan Miranda and Sean Burroughs get optioned to AAA-Reno today to make room for Allen and Blum. A strong start in the second half is essential for the D-backs and their fans.
