The Arizona Diamondbacks haven't lost two consecutive games since May 12 and 13 and they were 24-0 when leading after seven innings. Both of those streaks feel on Tuesday to the Pittsburgh Pirates when the normally steady David Hernandez gave up five runs in the eighth inning with the D-backs leading 5-3.
Daniel Hudson started the game a bit shaky (again) but regrouped (again) and finished with a nice line: three runs, one earned, three hits, seven strikeouts, and one walk. Offensively, the Diamondbacks got solo homers from Kelly Johnson, Juan Miranda, and Chris Young who is tied with Prince Fielder for the National League lead in extra-base hits.
Hernandez had an ERA of of just 1.65 with just five-earned runs allowed all season (27.1 IP) before he matched that total by giving up five earned in this game while recording no outs. Here's the blow-by-blow:
1.Garrett Jones doubles (7) on a fly ball to right fielder Justin Upton.
2.Jose Tabata doubles (12) on a fly ball to right fielder Justin Upton. Garrett Jones scores.
3.Josh Harrison singles on a ground ball to center fielder Chris Young. Jose Tabata scores.
4.Xavier Paul hits a sacrifice bunt. Josh Harrison to 2nd. Xavier Paul to 1st.
5.Andrew McCutchen walks. Josh Harrison to 3rd. Xavier Paul to 2nd.
6.Lyle Overbay doubles (12) on a line drive to center fielder Chris Young. Josh Harrison scores. Xavier Paul scores. Andrew McCutchen scores.
Pitcher Change: Esmerling Vasquez replaces David Hernandez, batting 9th.
The D-backs will be back at it on Wednesday.
