The Arizona Diamondbacks got off to a good start in Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs as Willie Bloomquist sent the fourth pitch of the game into the left field bleachers of Wrigley Field, but unfortunately that’d be the only offense Arizona was able to mount as the team eventually went on to lose 4-1.
Bloomquist was filling in for Stephen Drew as his abdominal injury isn’t quite healed though he is apparently getting closer according to manager Kirk Gibson.
The Cubs were able to score on a homer from Alfonso Soriano, his second of the season, in the bottom of the third to tie the game and then take the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Carlos Pena after Joe Saunders walked Geovany Soto to load the bases.
Arizona had a chance to take the lead after trailing 2-1 as the Diamondbacks were able to load the bases with one out in the eighth due to a throwing error by Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro. That rally didn’t work out as planned however because former phenom Kerry Wood, pitching for the third straight day, got Ryan Roberts to watch a third strike go by him before forcing Gerardo Parra to fly out.
The Cubs added an additional two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the victory.
