After one game, the Diamondbacks have proven themselves. What turned out to be an awful Spring Training (12-25 record, general stench of awfulness) has given way to a 162-game season with unpredictable twists.
↵Arizona defeated the Colorado Rockies in 11 innings on Friday, plating seven runs and hitting the ball quite well. The Diamondbacks got 15 hits; Justin Upton and Miguel Montero went yard. They are now undefeated in 2011 with a 1-0 record.
↵We're obviously not going to sit here and tell you that this team is going to win 85 games this year, because that's just not going to happen. But for one day, Kirk Gibson was absolutely correct. Playing the game "the right way" and getting "gritty" with it is not just media-friendly banter, but actually can help determine the outcome of the games.
↵How else do you explain Willie Bloomquist leading off the lineup and getting three hits? Or veteran J.J. Putz pitching an excellent 11th inning for the save? It's just magic, folks.
↵I'd like to see the D-backs do well; the games are more fun when the team is competitive and fighting for a playoff spot. Is that too much to ask during the hot summer months? Something fun to cheer for? Give us a chance, D-backs!
