Cardinals vs Rams: Head coach Ken Whisenhunt puts blame on wide receivers for lack of offensive production.

The Arizona Cardinals only managed to only put a field goal on the board in their ugly, nationally-televised 17-3 loss to the St. Louis Rams Thursday evening.

While the untrained eye may point to their horrendous offensive line play (nine sacks allowed) for the lack of points, head coach Ken Whisenhunt had a different theory. According the Arizona Republic's Kent Somers, Whisenhunt believes the game could have been entirely different if it weren't for some missed opportunities from Arizona's wide receivers:

"I can tell you four balls that we dropped that would have been huge plays," Whisenhunt said. "Guys falling down trying to run a route. We got 1-on-1 matchups where we're not making the catches...We get open down the middle of the field, we've got to make the catch. We get open on the curl, we've got to make the catch."

This is an interesting proclamation considering there were at least two or three occasions in which QB Kevin Kolb clearly missed a streaking wide receiver by throwing it to their wrong shoulder. Nonetheless, there were still a handful of costly drops from this pass-catching group and it's very possible the outcome could have been different if some of them managed to hang on to the ball (cough, cough Michael Floyd).

The NFC West is now a whole lot more interesting with the Cardinals (4-1) losing their first contest of the season. The Rams (3-2) are over .500 for the first time since 2006 and the San Francisco 49ers would be in a tie with Arizona if they can take care of the Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
