With Sunday's 2-8 defeat, the Arizona Diamondbacks (69-72) lose their second consecutive series against the once bottom-feeding San Diego Padres (66-75) to fall 10.5 games out of the NL West race.
The D-backs still remain 6.5 games back in the wild card race which isn't an impossible number if you're a true believer. But Arizona would literally have to win out if they're to get to the 90 victory plateau that seems to be the measuring stick of success in baseball.
The D-backs have Monday off before beginning a two-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers (74-67) at Chase Field on Tuesday. Arizona then gets Thursday off before continuing their home stand against the San Francisco Giants (79-61), a team they took two of three from on the road earlier last week.
Arizona takes on all divisional opponent the rest of the way excluding a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs to close out September.
