Olympics 2012 Medal Count: U.S. Tries To Build A Bigger Lead On Sunday

The United States will be hoping to open up some sort of gap on Sunday in the total medal count. They are currently hold the slimmest of leads over China in total medals and gold medals, having one more than China in each category.

As track and field heads into its third day on Sunday, the United States and Great Britain hope to keep performing well. The host country picked up three track and field golds on Saturday, which helped them scoot ahead of Russia for third place in total medals.

Here are the total medal leaders at the end of Saturday's events:

1. United States - 54 (26, 13, 15)
2. China - 53 (25, 16, 12)
3. Great Britain - 29 (14, 7, 8)
4. Russia - 28 (3, 15, 10)
5. Japan - 24 (2, 10, 12)
