The 2012 U.S. Open tennis tournament is well into the first day of matches at Flushing Meadows in New York. The No. 3 seed on the women's side, Maria Sharapova, has already completed her opening-round match against Melinda Czink of Hungary. Sharapova advanced easily, posting a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win.
No. 5 on the women's side, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, defeated Polona Hercog of Slovakia in straight sets after battling through a tiebreak in the first. Samantha Stosur of Australia, the seventh seed, has also moved past the first round. She defeated Petra Martic of Croatia, 6-1, 6-1.
The top seeds, Roger Federer and Victoria Azarenka, are both set to play later Monday evening. Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who trains in Phoenix, starts her U.S. Open tournament against Venus Williams on Tuesday morning.
