Arizona State Football: Michael Eubank Using Snub as Motivation

Arizona Sun Devils coach Todd Graham announced that redshirt sophomore Taylor Kelly will be the starting quarterback for the season. But ask backup Michael Eubank, and he'll tell you the competition is just beginning.

Eubank spoke with Fox Sports Arizona about the potentially chaotic quarterback situation that could develop at ASU this year.

Eubank is a 6'5", 242-pound monster of a man with quick feet and a strong arm. Graham heavily recruited Eubank while he was the coach at University of Pittsburgh, and the redshirt freshman is a fan favorite because of his electric upside.

The red-shirt freshman is using the snub as motivation, like all good competitive individuals.

"The quarterback competition is not ended just yet," Eubank cautioned. "I take everything as motivation."

Kelly's slight experience edge also helped garner him the starting spot. The coaches told Eubank he was too prone to lingering around when nothing was showing up instead of using his speed to take off.

"If that's how it has to be, that's how it will be," he said. "I'll just work harder each and every day."

If Eubank shows enough improvement, even Graham acknowledged that the situation could change pretty quickly. He plans on giving Eubank weekly snaps -- starting in goal line and short-yardage situations -- but insists it is a very close two-horse race.

"This is just the beginning, and it will be a process," Graham said. "We'll see where we end up."
