The 2012 London Olympics came to a close Sunday and athletes from the University of Arizona and Arizona State University were well represented on the medal podium. The two schools combined to win eight medals in London, including five gold medals.
Arizona athletes finished 14th among colleges with five total medals. Those five medals included three gold medals, two of which came in swimming. Alyssa Anderson won gold in the women's 4x200m relay while Nick Thoman won in the men's 4x100 medley relay. Andre Iguodala added the third gold medal when the U.S. men's basketball team knocked off Spain to win gold. Arizona athletes also won two silver medals.
ASU's James Harden was also on the men's basketball team, capturing one of the Sun Devils two gold medals in 2012. Amy Le Peilbet won the other gold when the United States women's soccer team won gold. Rowie Webster added a third medal for ASU when she won bronze in women's water polo.
