2012 Olympics, Final Medal Count: USA, China, Russia Claim Top Spots

The United States began the 2012 Olympics as the favorites to win the most medals in London. After a little more than two weeks of competition, the U.S. came out on top in both the overall and gold medal counts. They battled with China for the top spot throughout, but strong showings in basketball, volleyball and track & field in the final days propelled the U.S. to the top.

As a nation, we won a total of 104 medals. (104!) 46 of them were gold, with 29 being silver and 29 being bronze. China finished in second place with 87 medals - 38 gold, 27 silver and 22 bronze. Russia made a push late to move into a comfortable third place finishing, taking home 82 medals. They won 24 gold, 25 silver and 33 bronze.

The host country of Great Britain finished in fourth place, winning 29 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze. Germany finished fifth with a total of 44 medals.

It was a great showing for the Americans in London. Here's hoping for even more medals in 2016.
