Olympics 2012 Medal Count: United States Enters Sunday With Huge Lead

It was a long journey, but the United States made it into Sunday's final day of the 2012 Olympics in London with a commanding lead in the overall medal count by country. It is not only a big lead over second-place China, but it is an insurmountable lead. China trails by 15 medals with only a handful of gold medal events remaining.

The United States has one more gold medal foremost in their mind to add to their first-place 44 golds thus far. The U.S. men's basketball team will go for the gold medal on Sunday and try to make it a repeat.

Here is how the top five looks in the latest medal count:

  1. United States, 102 (44 gold, 29 silver, 29 bronze)
  2. China, 87 (38, 27, 22)
  3. Russia, 78 (21, 25, 32)
  4. Great Britain, 62 (28, 15, 19)
