Olympic Medal Count: Michael Phelps, Caitlin Leverenz Helps USA Stay Tied With China

Michael Phelps did a great job helping the United States stay on track with China as part of the overall medal count. Phelps scored two more medals to become the athlete with the most Olympic medals ever, as he finished with silver in the 200 meter butterfly and then anchored gold on the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay. Allison Schmitt also landed another gold for the United States in the 200 meter freestyle.

Phelps was the headliner, but as for the Arizona locals, it was Caitlin Leverenz who did her part as well with a bronze medal in the 200 meter individual medley. The Tucson product gives the Untied States another swimming medal and keep them on track with China in the medal count. China is still leading in the golds though, as Leverenz lost to Shiwen Ye in the same event.

The overall medal count has the USA and China up top, but who's trailing them? The medal count:

  1. China, 23 (13 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze)
  2. United States, 23 (9, 8, 6)
  3. Japan, 13 (1, 4, 8)
  4. France, 11 (4, 3, 4)
  5. South Korea, 8 (3, 2, 3)
