London 2012 Olympics Recap: Team USA Collects 5 Medals In Saturday's Events

Day 1 of the 2012 London Olympics is in the books and Team USA is currently in third place in the medal count, sitting behind China and Italy. China has six medals total, four gold and two bronze, Italy has collected five, two gold, two silver and one bronze, and the US has five, one gold, two silver and two bronze.

Ryan Lochte's victory over rival Michael Phelps was the story of the day. Lochte swam a stellar race in the Men's 400m Individual Medley event, picking up Team USA's first (and currently only) Gold Medal. Phelps failed to medal in the event, ending a 16 event streak. The last time Phelps swam a race and did not get at least a Bronze Medal was 2000, at the Sydney Games. The two longtime rivals will see each other again in the Men's 200m Individual Medley.

Team USA picked up a Silver Medal in the Men's Archery Team event as Jacob Wukie, Jake Kaminski and Arizona native Brady Ellison lost the Gold Medal match against Italy by a single point. Elizabeth Beisel picked up the other Silver Medal of the day in the Women's 400m Individual Medley event. The Bronze Medals for Team USA came via the swimmers: Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt placed third in the US Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay and via Peter Vanderkaay did the same in the Men's 400m Freestyle.

Arizona's other representative in Saturday's events wasn't as successful as Ellison. Caitlin Leverenz competed in the Women's 400m Individual Medley, finishing sixth.

In non-medal news, the Women's Soccer and Women's Basketball teams had easy victories, a 3-0 victory over Columbia in soccer and an 81-56 win over Croatia in basketball. Team USA was also in action in the Beach Volleyball event, where Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings defeated Australia, and Jake Gibbs and Sean Rosenthal picked up the win in a match against South Africa. In non-beach Volleyball, the Women's team beat Korea 3-1.
