There is no real handle on where Arizona State shortstop Deven Marrero will land during Monday night's MLB Draft. In Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com's latest mock draft, Marrero is mentioned as high as no. 8 to the Pittsburgh Pirates and again at no. 12 to the New York Mets before finally landing at no. 16 to the Washington Nationals. The Nationals are an up-and-coming team with a lot of young talent so falling that far could end up being a blessing in disguise.
Marrero is the no. 13 rated prospect on Keith Law of ESPN.com's final prospects rankings heading into the draft.
Here is what Law had to say about the 6-foot-1, 194 pounder:
Once viewed as a top-five pick, Marrero's stock has dropped a bit after a lackluster spring compounded by various adjustments to his setup and swing that have made things worse. He still has the potential to be an above-average shortstop if he can get his swing back to where it was last season.
