U.S. Open 2012 Results: Webb Simpson Wins First Career Major

On Sunday, the 2012 U.S. Open came to an end. When the smoke had finally cleared at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Webb Simpson was the least-maimed victim at the hands of the tricky course. Simpson shot a final round of 2-under to take the U.S. Open title at 1-over. It is the first career Grand Slam win for Simpson.

Jim Furyk entered the final round tied with Graeme McDowell at 1-under for the lead. McDowell fell behind early, but Furyk managed to stay at even par for most of the day and retain his lead. Furyk ultimately faltered, however, including bogeying on two of his final three holes to hand Simpson the victory.

Local boy Phil Mickelson, of course, had a borderline-horrific opening round and was never really in contention from that point on. The same was true of defending champion Rory McIlroy. Tiger Woods, who briefly flirted with a share of the lead heading into the third round, went 6-over on his first six holes on Sunday to fall well out of contention.
