2012 Kentucky Derby: Sabercat Could Prove Lucrative Bet Come Saturday

With the post positions set, the 2012 Kentucky Derby is just about ready to get under way on Sunday at Churchill Downs. All that's missing is your hard earned money placed as bets on a group of immaculate thoroughbreds.

One such horse is Sabercat, a name that you certainly should know before you do any of your betting. Here is some more inforamtion on Sabercat:

Horse: Sabercat

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Pedigree: By Bluegrass Cat out of a Forty Niner mare (Miner's Blessing)

Career Record: 8-3-0-2

Career Earnings: $782,849

Notable Races: G1-Arkansas Derby (3rd); G2-Rebel (8th); G3-Delta Jackpot (1st)

Here's is SB Nation's resident horse racing expert Mark Gardner with the commentary:

Sabercat, like Dullahan and Rousing Sermon, is a closer that should benefit from a fast pace in the early stages of Saturday's Derby. Additionally, this colt did improve in the Arkansas Derby after a poor effort in the Rebel, and it's always better to see a colt run an improving race going into Louisville.

At 30/1 on the morning line, this colt might be a horse to include on trifecta and superfecta tickets in the hopes he can get a piece of the prize at a big price.

Certainly a name to keep in mind when filling out you ticket on Saturday.
