2012 MLB Mock Draft: Deven Marrero Selected By Pittsburgh Pirates

The Arizona State Sun Devils have a history of sending elite talent to the Major League level, headlined by guys such as Barry Bonds and Dustin Pedroia. With the 2012 MLB Draft just a few weeks away it appears that yet another Sun Devil will be selected in the first round.

Deven Marrero has been a talented shortstop throughout his tenure with ASU, and despite a bit of a disappointing season in recent months the sky is still the limit for him. Most figured Marrero would be a top-three pick at the draft (Keith Law even had him as the No. 1 prospect heading into the year) but it appears his stock has dropped a little bit.

The latest mock draft from Baseball America has the Pittsburgh Pirates selecting Marrero with the eighth pick in the first round. Multiple other mock projections have this same pick, and it really does look like a solid fit all the way around. The Pirates lack an impact shortstop and Marrero could be a fast riser through their farm system.
