Disaster befell Phil Mickelson on the first hole of the back nine. After bogeying three holes on the front nine, Mickelson went way out of bounds on the tenth and took a penalty stroke, settling for triple bogey. Mickelson is now at +4 and has some scrambling to do.
Louis Oosthuizen made a late charge on the back nine, birdieing the 17th and 18th holes to take the lead into the clubhouse at -4.
Of the local golfers from Arizona, Jim Furyk is at -1 through 12 holes, Aaron Baddeley finished one-under par thanks to three birdies (two on the par fives), Martin Kaymer had a solid 72, Paul Casey is at +2 with three bogeys and a double bogey, TIm Clarke had bogeys on the start of the back nine to finish at +1, Rory Sabbatini also stays at +1 while still moving through Amen Corner, Martin Laird sticks at +4, Robert Garrigus is at +5 and Chez Reavie finished at +7.
