The 2012 Kentucky Derby will take place at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 5. The annual horse race is the first leg in the annual Triple Crown, along with the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. The race has been held each year since 1875.
"The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" is the most well-known horse race in the world and one of the biggest annual events in Kentucky, drawing tens of thousands of race fans, dedicated and casual alike, to Louisville each year.
As of Monday, the current favorites to take home the race include Bodemeister (9/2), Dullahan (8/1), Gemologist (7/1) and Union Rags (9/2). Of course, that is likely to change over the course of the week, as the horses continue to work out and oddmakers get closer looks at the competitors.
Last year's race was won by Animal Kingdom, who failed to win either the second or third legs of the Triple Crown, which is arguably the hardest championship to attain in all of sports.
