NFL Mock Draft 2012: The Philadelphia Eagles Add Depth In The Secondary

With the 15th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select Dre Kirkpatrick, CB , Alabama.

I had a difficult time making this selection for the Eagles. I believe if Fletcher Cox or Luke Kuechly is available at this spot the Eagles will jump on either one of them. With both men off the board, the Eagles must still aim for value while addressing a need. They get the best of both worlds with Dre Kirkpatrick.

In 2010, Kirkpatrick had 53 tackles, seven pass breakups and three interceptions. In 2011, Kirkpatrick was named a second team All-American by the Associated Press and was part of a defense that led the country in pass defense.

Kirkpatrick as excellent size (6'2) for a cornerback and he is a prototypical man coverage cornerback. Kirkpatrick posses good speed and long arms, which will help him in press coverage.

Kirkpatrick is solid in runner support and is a very strong tackler with the ability to improve when he gets into the league.

The Eagles have a lot of options here. They could use depth on their O-line, another linebacker and another wide receiver. However, with the additions of Demetress Bell, DeMeco Ryans and the re-signing of DeSean Jackson, it makes sense for the Eagles to upgrade a struggling secondary. Kirkpatrick will come in and have an immediate impact.

The NY Jets are on the clock next and Cody Ulm has their selection.
