On Sunday, NASCAR held the Kobalt Tools 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The third race of the 2012 Sprint Cup season was an important one for many of the drivers, looking to find their rhythm and not dig themselves into a deep hole right at the start of the season.
Kasey Kahne, in particular, was looking to make a statement. He qualified for the pole position in Sunday's race, but failed to finish either of the previous two races and entered the day in 31st place in the Sprint Cup standings. He stayed in the top 10 for a good amount of time, but ultimately finished 19th in the race. Still, finishing the entire race and placing in the top 20 is a great step in the right direction for Kahne.
Tony Stewart ended up taking the checkered flag in the race, while Jimmie Johnson came in second. Johnson's fourth place finish last week and second place finish on Sunday are doing a good job of erasing his performance in the Daytona 500 to open the season, when he wrecked, finished 42nd and was penalized 25 points for rules infractions.
Stewart is now in seventh place in the Sprint Cup standings with 100 points.
